A very pleasant village pub, actually owned now by the village and supported by the majority of the local community. It’s an old building, probably with 17th Century roots, which has been extended over the years and recently modernised. The car park is behind the pub, and there is a pleasant garden at the side. There are several benches and seats at the front as well. Inside, it feels a bit labyrinthine with multiple rooms, all quite large. There are apparently 3 bedrooms, but we didn’t see these. There is a large, pleasant bar, a skittle alley which also has a dartboard, and another bar area mainly used for dining. The landlord is very helpful and happy to chat, and the landlady made us feel very welcome. Food was averagely priced for the area and was excellent – generous portions, well prepared and tasty. Ales were in very good condition – Otter Ale, Tribute and Proper Job this visit, very much enjoyed. I’d be very happy to return here, perhaps to try the B&B as it’s a great rural location.

Extract from the community appeal to the council.

The King’s Arms is a valuable asset and this was recognised by its listing as an Asset of Community Value, the first in East Devon. Stockland has already lost its shop and post office. The King’s Arms is the only remaining amenity that can offer a meeting place for all sections of the community. The loss of any of the current facilities within the pub will have a detrimental effect on community cohesion.
