Malden man left this review about The Smoker

The pub is indeed named after a smoke coloured horse, a charger owned by the first Lord of Tabley who won a large proportion of its races from 1790. Allegedly the only pub of this name. The building claims to date from 1597, I suppose it may perhaps in part. However you look at it this is clearly a building of some age and retains a partially thatched roof as well as a set of three steps outside to assist in the mounting of one's horse.
Inside there are numerous connected areas and a feel of a recent modernisation, partly sympathetic but I doubt there is much original left, even the low ceiling beams don't feel especially ancient. There were a couple of proper log fires lit, recent looking wood panelling, lots of wildlife and unfortunately hunting pictures. Seating is mixed perhaps with two many high tables and benches especially in a rather foody pub like this.
Robinson's beers, four on, Dizzy Blonde, Unicorn, Wizard and Cumbria Way.
Some new looking outdoor seating and the garden is clearly a work in progress.
Accessible and with a suitable toilet. Not the place for a session more for food and not easy to get to without a car however Plumley station is not far.

Named after a racehorse, not a nicotine user.
