Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Borough Arms

The Borough Arms is a classic town boozer and is certainly one of the best pubs in Crewe. It's been almost 7 years since my last visit, but little has changed. It's a cosy, small and busy place with an inverted L-shaped bar and a side room. The bar has a selection of keg (as well as Old Rosie cider) on one side and an impressive line-up of 10 handpulls on the other side.

The cask selection on our visit was Fyne Ales Jarl, Oakham Inferno, Weetwood Jester IPA & Old Dog, Salopian Voodoo & Port In A Storm, Thornbridge Jaipur, White Swan & Market Porter & Marston's Wainwright. It was good to see all 10 handpulls clipped.

Service was efficient without being over-friendly. With no seats, we were left with some rather awkward standing space alongside a narrow shelf. A couple of our party indulged in the popular ham salad rolls being brought out and placed on the bar. They looked inviting, apart from a touch too much salad for my liking!

I think it's a toss up between this place and Hops for the best pub/bar in Crewe. I hope to try Hops next time I'm in the town to see which one is the best these days.

The entrance to the Borough Arms is faced by a bar that is lined with craft and premium keg fonts. To the right is a small seating area and to the left some steps lead up to more seating and a second section of bar that supports ten handpumps, all of which were in operation during my visit just after midday on Saturday. Also in this raised seating area are some stairs that lead down to a lounge and advertised beer garden. The ceiling of the pub is completely covered in old pumps clips and the walls are adorned with framed old beer advertisements, with a few etched mirrors thrown in for good measure. My visit was not long after the pub had opened, but a handful of locals had already found their way in. There was no background music and the TV on the wall was off, I imagine it is saved for rugby! The service was polite and this was certainly the best pub for real ale that I visited during my crawl.

Visited on Tuesday evening and the Borough Arms was very busy. This is a popular pub and with the 10 cask ales on the bar probably has the best selection in Crewe for the discerning real ale drinker. A cosy traditional feeling pub, pump clips all over the ceiling, what looked like a real fire (though not lit) and a TV (not on). No music playing but there was plenty of conversation going on to generate a pleasant atmosphere.

A beer garden is signed to the rear.

My half of Burton Bridge Top Dog Stout set me back a reasonable £1.85. I can't remember the full line-up but there was a varied selection and surely something for everyone (even Doom Bar).

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Borough Arms

Doesn't look that much from the street, and don't be too distracted by the Belgian bottled beer signs outside, but this turns out to be an excellent Good Beer Guide pub. Retaining two bars, the side one as you enter has a fine array of (mostly) interesting imported beer founts and some ciders, plus more seating in another room at the back. However, the front bar, located up a couple of steps, has an impressive row of ten handpumps (from which I went for the Mansfield England Pride, £3.25, but could have gone for almost anything from the diverse range of styles on offer). Traditional furniture throughout, although the decor is dominated by Belgian breweriana.

I counted 12 hand pumps, one with a cider on, six others with ales. I think a few beers had run off and not been replaced because the pub was very busy with Luton Town fans. As such, it doesn't seem fair to write a detailed review or award a rating. Beer choice is illustrated by my photos. It was good to see that the town's pubs were benefiting from the visit of the Hatters.

It looks like a dump but once inside its a revelation, beer wise. Fantastic choice of beers and friendly staff and customers. Recommended.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Borough Arms

A good traditional pub and well worth a visit. The staff and other drinkers were friendly and chatty on our Thursday eve visit. There were nine ales on hand pump on our visit. I was in luck as there were two ales from Ossett in the line up, so I went for the Ossett Amethyst and Yorkshire Blonde, whilst Mrs A went for the Hopback Spring Zing and Oakham Curmudgeon. There was also a lounge area downstairs, which lead out to a reasonable sized beer garden. The clientele all had the same focus, which was to get a decent pint of beer at a very reasonable price. Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild was on, so this must be a regular, after reading reviews below.

Thuck Phat left this review about The Borough Arms

The Borough Arms doesn't look great but inside the welcome is warm, the atmosphere good and the beer better.
There's little to say about the interior other than it's small and on the Saturday evening we visited you couldn't see much of it as the place is very popular and rightly so.
Beers on were: O'Hanlons Red Ale, Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby and UK Cascade, Fyne Ales Jarl, Wall Pale and Easy, Cameron's Strongarm, Wood Street Horsesugar, Dark Star Hophead and American Pale Ale. A good selection that and all in good condition. What's more the beer is served in oversized glasses, allowing for a decent head, by attractive barmaids. Perfect.
You don't get many like this - great beer and friendly atmosphere in an unassuming package - well worth a visit.

It doesn't look much from the outside, but this is a mecca for the real ale drinker. The side entrance leads directly to a section of the bar with a very wide range of keg taps with many continental lagers and foreign beers,so you have to squeeze around to the side counter to view the nine handpumps on the go.There was a wide range of both styles and strenghts and some leading microbrewers featured on my trip with two from both Dark Star and Sarah Hughes. All pints sampled by the crew were in top condition. There is a small brewing operation here but none of the house ales featured on our Saturday evening trip.
The interior is quite modest and winds around the servery, with a small back section to the right of the entrance.Breweriana covered the walls and a long bench behind the handpump bar was popular with the locals, with a good mix of age groups. It has a proper boozer atmosphere, friendly and with two attractive barmaids enough to perk up any old soaks. We had intended to crawl around the other 2014 GBG entries for Crewe but this pub was so good we felt there was no reason to move on.A must visit when in Crewe if you care about well kept real ale,a fine example of a thriving community local.

Edge of town real ale pub, simply a must to visit. Nine ever changing cask ales, many Belgium and continental beers on, many more seciality bottles. Does not do food but this pub is just so friendly and welcoming, a top quality pub.
