Blue Scrumpy left this review about The 'Front

The 'front was the first open pub we came to on our way from Falmouth Town station. It's a two-storey building on the right-hand side as you enter Custom House Quay and just behind the Trago Mill store. The ground floor is the main bar, whilst the upper floor appeared to be some kind of fish & chip restaurant. Whilst the pub itself does not serve food, the table nextdoor to ourselves was full of people consuming fish and chips, presumably from upstairs. You are free to bring your own beer in.

My experience of Cornwall pubs is that the real ale selection is often fairly limited. Not so here. A total of 8 ales were on - Treen's Essential, Firebrand West Coast Session IPA, Sharp's Special, Tintagel Pendragon, St Ives Alba & Meor, Atlantic Sea Salt Stout & Beartown Kodiak. In addition, there were 3 boxed ciders - Pitchfork Scrumpy, Abrahall's AM & 3D Strawgasm.

The pub has very few windows and is therefore quite dark. But it does feel like a proper drinkers' pub. Outdoor seating is overlooking the harbour. Whilst it wasn't full during our afternoon visit, we returned later in the evening to find the inside packed, with some sort of solo guitarist performing. There was a lively atmosphere and at least 2 of the real ales had changed, with both Treen's Sunbeam & Firebrand Beast Of Bodmin having appeared.

Service was good. I'd have to rate this as the best pub in Falmouth. It's certainly unusual for me to return to the same pub on the same day!

despite a change of ownership i’m pleased to say it’s still a charming little Cornish real ale pub. Right next to the award winning chippy and you are actively encouraged to bring your fish and chips to eat here; in fact, most of the clientele were doing exactly that. Basic, bare boarded interior with decor all of local interest, most of the beers were local too including the lagers. friendly regulars in on a Wednesday afternoon, 9 real ales and plenty of ciders too. Inane background music and initially disinterested service were the only negatives, it’s a must visit pub in Falmouth.

Basic ground floor bar, drinks only but fills with people bringing their own food. Gets bust as the small outside area is near the harbour front, though used as a smoking area.

I didn't want to like this place on first view, being in a whitewashed building on the quayside surrounded by tourists, but changed my mind on viewing the bank of 14 handpumps in a dark and cosy arched room. There were actually 9, mainly Cornish, ales on including some rare local ones, as well as 6 ciders from the box. There are a few tables outside on the quay, while at the back is an area set up for music and open mic sessions. No food served but you can bring it in from the adjacent fish and chip shop. A good drinking house.

The Front is right by the quayside and situated underneath a fish & chip shop.
Once inside there is a dimly lit narrow oblong shaped room with the bar on the mid right side, the floor is bare boarded, there is bench seating and chairs and tables with small stools.
There was a very good choice of real ales on the bar,on our first visit we had two drinks of Skinners Cornish Trawler, which went down very well, the other real ales noted were Skinners Lushingtons,Sharps Special,Tintangel Pendragon and Trecus Cuckoo.
A group came on and got people up dancing with them.
The pub was packed on our early Sunday evening visit, with everybody having a good time.
We revisited later in the week to check out if you could bring your own food in,the answer was yes,so we had fish and chips form the chip shop above which went down very well with a few drinks of Skinners Lushingtons.
Both me and the wife thought this was a top notch pub.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The 'Front

Excellent real ale / cider pub located (as expected, no estate agent's licence here) on the quayside. Fairly basic alehouse-style interior, but it was so busy on a Friday evening that it was difficult to take in much detail. With 12 of 14 handpumps in operation, one was spoilt for choice, but I went for the Driftwood Spars Unexpected ("possibly gluten free", but a decent pint whatever is the case).

This is a lively traditional local’s pub, situated down on the Quayside, which is renowned for its wide range of well kept ales. The interior is a single rectangular room with the servery immediately to the right on entering. There are exposed floorboards, whitewashed walls and a partly vaulted ceiling throughout, whilst the servery has a dark wood counter and mirrored bar back. On the wall opposite the bar, there is a tiny fireplace with a large plain mirror above and some good banquette and low stools seating to either side, some of which is partially screened from the rest of the room by a slight recess in the left hand wall. The room opens up a fair bit beyond the bar and whilst I suspect there is normally a good amount of additional seating filling this space normally, much of it had been cleared away or moved to the perimeter when we visited on a Monday night, in order to create space for a dancefloor. A small band was tirelessly playing traditional Breton folk tunes, whilst some enthusiastic locals dragged unsuspecting punters onto the floor to dance with them. It was certainly a lively atmosphere and one chap trawled the pub for dancers in between each tune, although thankfully he wasn’t pushy so I didn’t have to embarrass myself. As you’d expect from a pub in such a location, the walls are covered with lots of local photos and plenty of fishing themed bits and bobs. There were a few Quayside benches out the front of the pub that were popular with those hoping to avoid being roped into a dance (although the chap was very meticulous in checking outside as well), which looked like they’d be the top spot to bag on a bright summer’s day.
The bar had a handsome row of handpulls and correspondingly ugly line of bar blockers, although helpful blackboards on the bar canopy allowed me to establish the full ale range before ordering. Ales were exclusively from Cornish breweries, with the full line-up comprising Skinners Lushingtons, Mosaic IPA, Penny Come Quick and Seven Hop, Rebel Eighty Shilling and Mayhem, Tintagel Pendragon and Cornwall’s Pride and Sharps Special plus two real ciders. The staff were cheery and upbeat and served me a fine pint of the Pendragon.
I thought this was a very characterful and welcoming pub and whilst the upbeat mood created by the band and dancers certainly helped in this respect, I thought the place still had plenty of charm without such distractions. The beer range and quality seemed to be top notch and anyone looking to enjoy a few locally sourced beers would certainly do well to investigate. One of the highlights of my stay in Falmouth and certainly on the list for a revisit.

Blackthorn _ left this review about The Front

A somewhat tucked away bar around the back of the Falmouth’s main thoroughfare, it’s not the easiest place to find but it’s worth persevering. A few outside tables and chairs offer pleasant views of the river, whilst most of the locals were perched on stools at the bar.

Internally it looks to have been some sort of cellar at one time being quite long and narrow, although opening up slightly at the rear, with a vaulted brick ceiling that has been painted white and has an inset stained glass window half way along. A wood panelled bar counter runs along the right hand side of the pub and this had some beer barrels inset in to it as a decorative feature. The walls too were white washed and there was some unusual artwork dotted around. This is a proper pub with no distractions such as music, TV screens or fruit machines, just a buzz of conversation.

There was a good choice of beers on tap, exclusively from Cornwall, and on this occasion were Sharps Special, Skinners Betty Stogs, Sharps Sea Mist, Tintagel Arthur’s Ale, Sharps Coaster, Skinners Lushington, Rebel Eight Shillings and Dynamite Pioneer. Ciders too were all from Cornwall with Hop Slayer, Apple Slayer and Lyonesse from the Cornwall Cider Company along with Skreach. It’s not often you see such a good range exclusively from the one county, and the pub is certainly to be applauded for that.

This pub has a couple of entrances, one on a side road and one on the harbourside. Usually a choice of ales from both handpulls on the bar, and stillage set up in the room. Skinners the main beers, but they do other Cornish beers such as Wooden Hand, and they often have Fullers ESB on. Staff friendly and know their beer.

Revisited 8.6.11. Now CAMRA pub of the year. Deserves it with good beers served by knowledgeable staff. Enjoyed Dartmoor Dragon's Breath and Wentworth Gun Park Light Mild this visit.

The above was in June 2011, and we were back there yesterday and what a change. The old stillages have gone, and there were 14 handpulls along the bar, 4 with ciders on and the rest serving real ale. Same chap serving and excellent quality ales.

Superb pub tucked away down by the harbour side with a great range of ales. Also handy is that you can take in your own food so you can choose your favourite pasty shop and eat your pasty with a good pint of ale. There were some small local brewery ales on during our visit.
