I wasn't going to call in here, but when I passed it on the buses earlier in the day on my way to and from Shincliffe, I thought it might be worth a look in. So I changed my walking route and called in on my way from the Victoria to the Stonebridge. It was slightly disappointing to find only Landlord on hand pumps, and nothing I fancied among the keg options either, but then I remembered that I'd had a second beer at the Victoria, so I decided on a coffee here. Service was very friendly, but as I was clearly the only person here over 60, perhaps they thought I was the vice-chancellor or something. No, just a lowly pub reviewer recovering from overindulging at the best pub of the year so far. If I were in my early 20s I'd be happy to have this pub on my doorstep, but as it is I'll confine myself in future to the likes of the Victoria.

I'd initially tried to drive to this pub, which is on the outskirts of Durham within all of the city's university buildings. Unfortunately, the car park only fits about 4 cars. A 5th one had then parked blocking everything else. A quick drive around the area revealed no spaces nearby. So, I returned later in the day on foot.

This is firmly a student-dominated pub. There are a number of different sections. The bar area has lots of plants and feels like a greenhouse/conservatory, whilst an area to the left of the entrance feels a bit more pub-like. To the right of the entrance is a more formal dining area.

Fellow customers at the bar were all being asked for their ID. I was looking forward to producing mine, but sadly it was not requested.

The choice of real ales here had restored my faith in Durham's pubs after the dismal start to my day. Timothy Taylor Landlord, which seems to be getting almost as popular as Doom Bar was on, but was supplemented by a couple of beers from the Durham Brewery - Moana & White Gold. I opted for the Moana, a NZ IPA, which was hoppy and supposedly contained black pepper.

Dogs are allowed. How do I know? I had one jump up me whilst leaving the pub!

Notably, the ladies and gents toilets have recently been switched. The gents contains only cubicles, which made me wonder how the ladies use the urinals! I'll never know.

Lively pub which was well worth the walk to.

Nicely laid out pub but regrettably no ale of any strength. The entrance is actually on Stockton Road directly opposite the Bill Bryson library at the University.

The New Inn is a decent looking pub that is next to a very busy road junction and very close to Durham University.
Once inside there is a single room which runs the width of the pub,the bar faces on entry, the main area of the room is bare boarded but the seating areas are carpeted, the seating is comfy bench type and chairs, plus some normal tables and chairs, there is a pool table to the rear left and a TV to the left which was showing football.
There were two real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Durham Magnus which was a nice drink, the other beer was Yard of Ale Lemon Bomb.
The pub was fairy quiet on my Saturday dinner visit with a few students having meals.
This is a decent enough pub and worth the short walk from the Victoria.

If your currently studying in Durham, this is the place for you. I'd say the pub's customers were 99% students, which doesn't bother me at all, it was the large amount of fast food and plates of chips coming from the kitchen which was a bit off putting. Got what I called for, which was worth the walk. Durham Brewery White Gem and White Amarillo.
