Quite a change since my last visit, over a decade ago: the fish tank is no more. Just Landlord and Swan Blonde on at the time of my Sunday lunch appearance, between trains, and my half of Blonde was in pretty good nick. Definitely beats waiting 45 minutes on Oxenholme station. (The pavement is much better than it used to be, but be careful when crossing to it from the station, and take even more care on the way back. There's a sharp bend that some cars take a little faster than necessary. Use eyes and ears, engage brain and be ready to use turbo chargers )

Situated a few minutes from the station on an unlit B road which doesn’t always have a pavement – make sure your phone has a torch if you are attempting an evening visit, like this idiot was. As mentioned below, the building has been extended and contains a dining room and a two-part bar area though it’s a relatively bright and featureless in the main. A quiz was on the go with a fairly healthy attendance, given the pub’s relative isolation. GBG listed with three cask on the go - TT Landlord, Tetleys and Bowness Bay Swan Blonde - and my glass of the latter was in good nick (NBSS 3.5). Nothing to get excited about on the whole but the beer quality means it’s worth getting off the train for. 6.5

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Station

500 metres up the hill on a narrow footway beside a busy road links the station and The Station. Anyway, the original building has been extended (perhaps more than once) to provide a dining room as well as a two-part bar. Outdoor seating is provided to one side on benches beside the car park and also in a beer garden further back where a sizeable children's play area can also be found. With two of the four handpumps in use, the local Bowness Bay Lakeland Blonde (£3.75) was oddly supplemented by Otter Bitter from the other end of the country.

The Station is unfortunately a five minute walk from Oxenholme station, and there being no footpath for about half the distance, and no street lighting at all, mean that attempting the walk after dark is definitely not recommended. At this time of year, or if you have transport, it's probably worth the trip, for this is quite a pleasant roadside inn. The original rooms are supplemented by a conservatory-type extension on the car park side of the building, which functions as both entrance and dining room.

The original side wall features a fire place with solid fuel stove, with a fish tank next to it, both features being visible from both sides of the former outside wall. One of the fish has a grotesque swallowing motion that could keep me amused for hours. On the bar, by way of contrast, are some fairly mundane beers: Brains Bitter, Hawkshead Bitter, Copper Dragon Best Bitter and Moorhouses Blond Witch. Nothing particularly grim (though I know some people avoid Brains beers like the plague), but nothing to get too excited about either. I had the Hawkshead, and this was very pleasant and went down a treat; so much for my prejudices.

We spent an enjoyable half hour here, though the presence of helium-filled balloons and numerous table reservations suggested a party was soon to begin, so we probably timed it just right. I would be happy to call in again if meeting a train, or waiting for one, but as previously suggested, not after dark.
