I noticed passing this place on my way out that it was alleged to date from the mid sixteen hundreds and was haunted. It was open when I returned so I gave it a go. I don't know about ghosts but some of the punters could easily be mistaken for zombies. The interior of this split level, long and narrow room is more twentieth than seventeenth century. I counted four TV screens showing horse racing and I was alarmed to spot an Idiot Booth at the lower right. They were playing a soundtrack of old Pop / Soul rubbish.
The six hand pumps had five unused and St Austell Tribute (£3.50) which to be fair wasn't too bad.
I don't know if they go for rhyming slang in Derby but if they do there is a rhyming word for this place that sums up my impression of it.

Two cask ales were on. A longish thinish bar. Does its job I suppose.

This pub lost the Mr a few years ago and used to be an Ansells tied house in the 80s.
Once inside the pub still has the same layout with a long narrow room and the bar is on the right, there were a couple of real ales on the bar we had a drink of Pedigree and tasted slightly off the other beer was London Pride.
There were a few other people in here on a dinnertime visit who looked a bit dodgy.

Old pub that is now effectively one long thin room although there are alcoves etc. Beer on tap was only Pedigree and Bombardier although the "A" board outside says it has guest ales, I've never seen any. Had a pint of the Bombardier that was OK.. Get's rammed (pun fully intended) when Derby are at home, but usually quiet in midweek. The clientele aren't the smartest bunch which means I can usually win a few quid on the quiz machine. I wouldn't bother calling in otherwise.

Formerly the George, a large Coaching Inn, this is one of the most historic pubs in Derby but, for me, one of the most disappointing. The history is depicted on a placque outside but any past glories have been left firmly on the pavement. The modern, bland and souless interior comes as quite a shock and it also has one of the most dull beer selections in town. 6 hand pumps with Pride, Pedigree and Bombardier (which was off) being doubled up across them, a choice that is almost an embarrassment in a city with such a reputation of Real Ales. On the plus side, the barman was top notch, spotting that my Pride was about to go and refusing to serve it until the barrel was changed (bringing the fresh pint over to our table). He deserves a better pub than this. The multiple TV's I can handle at certain times, the darts area to the rear probably a plus point but the signs for Karaoke 3 times a week would probably make the numerous resident ghosts look elsewhere for a pint. One of the major curiosities is the skull unearthed during restoration that is on display but even this is barely visible high up over the rear of the bar. Admire the exterior and move on.
