Mick Bartley left this review about The Grace

We arrived 7.30pm and ordered. At 8.30pm they told us they had lost our order. To be fair to them they said they would give us the meal on the house. Half the meal then arrived at 9pm. When I asked 10 minutes later when we could expect the other half the manager intimated that as we were getting the meal for free we shouldn't complain. 2 minutes later he literally threw the food down in front of me

He seemed to think we should be grateful for getting a free meal. What he failed to understand that my wife and I were looking for nice night out together - not a free one!

The Grace is a strange looking pub in that the right side is single story and the left side two story.
Once inside there is a single room with the bar facing, there is bench seating and normal tables and chairs on the right side, the left side extends to the rear, the seating here is normal tables and chairs.
There was a decent choice of real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Wye Valley Bitter which was a very nice drink, the other bees were Bath Ales Barnsey,Prescott Chequered Flag and Exmoor Fox.
This is a decent enough pub,but it was empty at 12.45 on a Saturday dinner.

Refurbished and renamed since my previous review, décor wise it’s largely unchanged but now has some slate tiling on the floor and low lighting supplemented with numerous candles on the tables and window sills. Dining appears to have crept in to the front area of the pub, and a number of tables here were reserved on a recent Friday evening visit. The pub was quite busy, if not full, and this together with the harsh acoustics made it quite noisy, and conversation difficult, especially if you were sat at one of the larger tables and hence some way from your companions. There were just as many people in the garden as the pub, and this closes at 10:00pm, so quite where they were all going to go I’m not sure.

The menu is all tapas apart from some “pizzettes” (small pizzas) and we tried a number of dishes between us, most of which were priced around a fiver or so. On the whole these were ok, although I’ve had nicer tapas elsewhere. I don’t think there were any of the ten dishes that stood out as being exceptional, but then again, none that we didn’t like.

Beers on tap were Gem, Dirty Stop Out, Prohibition Ale and Arbor Motueka. Ciders were well represented with Stowford Press, Rosie’s Pig and Aspall’s Suffolk.

After a visit today the interior seems quite similar to how I remember from previous visits, sure the 4/5 Bristol drawing by Fuller on the wall was there last time.

The effort on refurb seems to have been focused on the garden. The covering from the external walled seating area I recall has gone with the addition of a lot more plants in separating tables with numerous apple trees and other fauna along with a variation of standard seating from what was there previously to varied chair and table styles.

4/5 real ales were on including my friend's Arbour Ales offering and Old Rosy's cider from to me which is a draught pump but after Real Cider thread could be classed as real.

Inside the inward opening windows remain for when the weather is hot, which today has been very and what I would actually say is a more food orientated feels as the front bar area had all tables with Menus laid on them although no cutlery.

Since the closure of the Robin Hoods Retreat this has been refurbished and reopened as The Grace. It is part of the growing Zazu's Kitchen's pub chain.

This is a pub that was very firmly in the gastro-pub genre until recently with renowned local chef Nathan Muir at the helm and there are still plenty of Michelin and other food guide stickers in the window. I understand that he may have recently moved elsewhere though and the blackboard menu now appears to offer a selection of tapas and lunch dishes. Whilst the rear of the pub looks to be more geared up for dining, the front area is very much for drinking.

It’s an L-shape pub with a curved, wood panelled bar counter in front of you as you go in and decor wise, it’s gastro-pub routes are clearly visible with the usual shades of green and cream paintwork, especially at the rear. Elsewhere though it’s a little more traditional, and there are even some old stained glass windows to one side. The flooring is a mixture of black and white chequered tiles to one side, parquet wood at the front and wood strip towards the rear. An old cast iron fire-place is off to one side and there are a couple of old leather sofa’s in front of the large windows which is a pleasant enough spot to sit and watch the world go by.

There was a good choice of beers on tap with Wickwar’s BOB, London Glory, London Gold, Bath Ales Special (which is a new one on me), Jail Ale, Caledonian Passion Fruit Beer and Brewer’s Boy. Ciders were Addlestones and Stowford Press.
