A village pub based on a 16th Century brew house which has been extended. There is a reasonable carpark, though it’s just past a bend so can be tricky to get out of. The garden at the back is well kept with a children’s play area, paved patio, and it gives wonderful views over the Dorset countryside. There is a skittle alley in an annex behind the pub. The main bar area has a laminated floor, and one side is set aside for darts. An adjacent room, probably the older part of the building, has an inglenook fireplace, tiled floor and structural timbers on display. An extension provides a carpeted restaurant area, the only part of the pub where dogs are not allowed. Food is excellent – freshly cooked, wholesome and reasonably priced. The mother and daughter (Gale and Naomi) who run the pub are extremely hospitable, very friendly and provide a very valuable asset to the village. Clientele are a mixture of village locals and people who seek out the pub for its food. There is also reported to be a resident ghost. Water is provided for dogs, while three handpumps provide real ale for their owners. This is a freehouse, and the ales change regularly. On this occasion, Butcombes, Palmers and Ryme Gambler Tawny Ale were being served. I had the latter, which was in perfect condition. A truly excellent establishment, well worth stopping for a meal, and somewhere I would be happy to spend considerable time.
