Run of the mill chain pub and a little disappointing for Chef & Brewer. Near to the railway station

A Chef and Brewer pub and restaurant in a red brick building. During late Victoria times the pub was renamed The Railway Hotel. There was an earlier pub on this site dating back to the 17th Century but the current building is Georgian. There is a small car park at the side and some outside seating near the road. The entrance is through the single L-shaped bar which has an abundance of new timber on the floor and walls, though part of the floor is tiled and is clearly much older than the rest. This bar has gaming machines, bar stools and a few tables and loud music which is a bit off-putting. Down some steps is the restaurant which makes good use of the historic building. There were 3 ales on draft, 2 from GK and a guest, Mr Squirrel fro Red Squirrel Brewery. The beers weren't that well kept and tasted somewhat artificial. Staff were friendly enough, and the WiFi worked, so it's worth popping in for a swift pint when passing or catching a train, and I'd probably include in a town crawl.
