Old Boots left this review about The Cumberland Inn

Nice frontage and a suitably woody interior, lots of panelling, bit of mosaic floor (probably modern) and a leaded skylight over the counter; WhatPub tells me it is grade II listed. No cask beer, although there are two unused pulls on the counter, just a horseshoe of low end national kegs, WhatPub says Jennings Cumberland is usually on. Nowhere near as busy as ‘spoons next door, a fair mix of clientele but tending to the codger end, probably gets younger later. Multi space layout where walls have been removed. Constant music and usual screens and machines, and one of those useless rotating snack dispensers that usually eat my pound coin. DJ booth in one corner with speakers and lights n stuff so may be one to avoid on post plague weekends even if you fancy the beer or just admiring the interior.

Will Larter left this review about The Cumberland Inn

This should be a really good pub, and I think in the past it has been in the Good Beer Guide. Certainly it is one of Camra's heritage pubs, for its well-preserved interior with original fittings, but unfortunately it was let down at the time of my visit by a poorly presented drink - sloppily poured, without either care or attention, resulting in no head on the beer. It tasted ok, and if I'd been in a pub in Luton or London the absence of a head would not have been worthy of comment, but here it felt like the result of either ignorance (and no proper training) or lack of attention.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Cumberland Inn

What a waste - this pub looks the business from the street, and the interior probably still has a bit of interest if you stick around long enough to take a good look around. What you actually get is a rough city pub, with loud Friday night music in the bar when I called in, a pool table in a quieter room at the back and a patio beer garden to the rear. No real ale from the solitary disused handpump, so had a quick pint of Younger's Scotch Ale (£2.30) before moving on...

ROB Camra left this review about The Cumberland Inn

Very good looking pub from the outside and the inside is on CAMRA's national inventory. Sadly, it seems to have fallen on hard times with just a very average Cumberland ale on handpump. which I suppose is more for the name rather than anything else. Lots of wooden panels which look good, but there's also a DJ rig, so it's probably very different on a Friday night than on our visit on a Wednesday afternoon. Should be so much better.

Walking into this pub is like looking through sepia coloured glasses into the past. With it mosaic tiled floor, dark wood panels stained glass partitions and old obscure photographs its no wonder it is in the National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors.
However the beer lets it down. Only one real ale (Lancaster Blonde) not a lot for a town centre pub which in the past made the good beer guide every year. So on this score the pub needs to try harder.
Botchergate has quite a few real ale pubs (The Woodrow Wilson, The William Rufus, The Griffin and The Cumberland) all within walking distance of the railway station but these pubs can get a little rowdy on a weekend.

Big old pub between two JDW's, yes 2.
Used to have a fine collection of railway stuff but this has gone. Not as god as it was but still well worth a visit. There are several more down the road worth a short walk
