Everywhere I looked, this pub was supposed to open at midday. However, I arrived earlier in the day to find it closed. Seeing that I was trying all of the doors, the guy who was inside put three fingers up to me. I didn't take this as an insult and assumed that he was saying that they now opened up at 3pm. With it being shortly before 2:30, I wasn't going to wait around in the freezing cold.

Returning early in the evening, I found a fairly full pub that was much more cosy than it had looked from the outside. A barmaid had appeared instead of the guy I had seen earlier. Wainwright is the regular beer. Directors was also on.

Nice enough pub. Shame about the beer choice.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Old English Gentleman

Comfortable seems to be the universal one-word summary for this place, housed in part of a fine-looking Georgian building, and I certainly wouldn't disagree. Has relatively dark furniture and decor, but this is enlivened with plenty of old theatrical photographs and other memorabilia. Branded as a Mansfield house, the distinctly limited beer choice - EPA and Jennings Cumberland - is the only drawback.

A comfortable theatre pub, owned by Marstons. A very cosy feel inside. Loads of black and white pics of old theatre stars on the walls. Dark wood interior, tartan carpet, dark leather bench seating, feature fireplace lined with various bits of crockery and copper jugs. Sadly just two ales, a flatlining Jennings Cumberland and Marstons EPA. With a bit of commitment at the bar to the cellar, this could be quite a destination. At this point though, it’s a one-visit second division curio. 6.5

Agree with Steve of N21, that this pub is very comfortable, but when you're on a Pubs Galore crawl seeking out different and unusual beers, you'll find yourself hitting a brick wall, especially when your choice is Marston's EPA and Jennings Cumberland.

I can see why this pub attracts as it is one of those that has a very cosy feel to it and it doesn’t take long before the pub begins to fit you like a well-worn pair of comfy slippers. Under new stewardship since October last year, the pub also underwent a bit of a makeover internally last November and the result is a very homely, friendly corner local.
Old style colour scheme with dark tartan carpet and lots of comfortable dark leather bench and stool seating dotted around the central bar. The large collection of black and white photo’s of thespians covers a couple of the panelled walls and some decent lighting including candles on the tables in the seating sections make it very homely.
No changes on the beer front though and it still appears to be a Marston’s house with Jennings Cumberland and Marstons EPA as the available beers. So not the most exciting choice but my pint of Cumberland was well kept and this was a comfortable place to enjoy it.
I can see why this one is popular with the locals.

Nicely furnished pub close to the new Hull History Centre and the old fire station. It's been broken through into one room from two and it's very obvious where the rooms were. Leather look settles and chairs round the edges along with a few dining tables and chairs. There are lots of pictures of old Hull and many more of the various stars who used to appear at the nearby theatre. It's a Marston's pub and there were 3 ales available from their extended range. My pint of Jennings Cocker Hoop was in good nick. The other beers available were Hobgoblin and Marston's Bitter. I've always liked this pub and used to call in a lot when I worked in Hull a few years ago. Thankfully nothing much has changed in the intervening time. It's little off the beaten track and is an oasis of calm just outside the city centre.

The Old English Gentleman is a small pub in the city centre but a bit out of the way once inside it looks unaltered and a bit olde worldy i tried Wooden Top Pirates Gold and this was a very good drink the other beers on the bar were Jennings Bitter Banks's Mild and Marstons Bitter i really liked this pub and think it is one of the better pubs in the middle of Hull.
