Quite hard to believe that this pub used to be a fake Irish pub called Durty Nellies, but it now functions as a proper Ale house with a lot of character. Plenty of pub memorabilia on all wall surfaces and probably one of the most impressive beer mat collection you are likely to see which totally covers the complete ceiling space.
The long bar area at the back of the pub has 16 hand pumps along its length most of which were in operation for our visit. The selection included brews from Milestone, Yates Brewery, Woldtop, Revolution, Black Country Ales and a couple from their own brewery.
The couple of the Black Country ales I tried were in good nick and this was a good characterful pub to enjoy them in.

A splendid pub in alehouse style with the inevitable pump clip decor but quite a choice of well kept beers on the seventeen hand pumps, one is for cider and another for perry. There is a yard at the rear where there was a small brewery, now gone.

As noted below, The Lion and Key is in common ownership with Walters & Wm. Hawkes just down the street and, if you visit more than one, you'll notice the similarities. This one is a long-established pub and feels like it, with dark bare boards and copious decorations (old photos, brewery enamels, pump clips, as well as "stuff"). Two adjoining rooms, with the bar in the back room and this shows the primary focus of the group: 16 pumps (a few turned) offered 3 ciders along with ale from far & wide (2 from Battlefields in Nuneaton, one from Long Man in East Sussex, for example), as well as Tetleys Cask for the more, aah, conservative drinker. The only taps I could discern offered Stowford Press and "Blond".

Food is available lunchtime & evening. I missed that, but was offered home-made crisps - I don't suppose everyone gets that, but I was impressed. I also noticed a couple of cakes on the bar (something for everyone here!).

Probably my favourite of the 3 in the group and I'd recommend The Lion and Key to anyone seeking good ale in Hull's scenic Old Town.

Now part of a small chain of pubs including the nearby Wm. Hawkes & Walters. When I used to work in Hull this place was called Durty Nellies and was a fake Irish bar. Quite a lot of the decor is unchanged and it's pretty obvious what it used to be looking round. Even then it had 3 real ales on the bar which was very unusual. Now there are several more and the pub has an onsite brewery, but I've never seen it working and I've never seen the beer in here. It's quite a decent pub in a slightly raucous sort of way and is one of our regular stop offs in Hull. In fact on this visit we called in both nights. It's quite rightly listed in the GBG2013.

Little more than a stone’s throw away from the Olde Black Boy in Hull’s Old Town is The Lion and Key, a pub which, according to the exterior sign, was established in 1817.

A rather ordinary looking exterior gives way to a pub that is much larger inside than expected from the outside, with the bar servery at the back on the right hand side of a bare boarded room that is light and airy. Light coloured wood panelling dominates and the walls are decorated with a fine collection of reproduction enamel signs advertising the delights of Brasso Metal Polish, Frys Cocoa, Colmans Mustard etc. Room is found gfor a CAMRA mirror and a high up shelf around the perimeter contains various artefacts and numerous beer bottles. A large long wooden board on one wall reveals that the pub was once Durty Nellys Irish Pub – needless to see not visited by me in that incarnation – until it reverted back to The Lion and Key in 2011.

A fine bar back, not original apparently, has panelled inserts referring to “Direct Importers”, “Choice Preserves” and “Tinned Fruits” and probably reflects the fact that the Britannia Coffee House previously stood on the site, which served tea, coffee, wine, spirits and food.

Extra seating is provided upstairs where, unusually, the kitchen is situated, doing meals at both lunchtimes and evenings.

At the far end of the pub is a small in house micobrewery copper plant, which I was told is not in use yet. This fact is confirmed by the latest edition of the local CAMRA branch magazine – Pub Mirror – where there is no mention of this brewery in the Local Breweries Listing section. There’s 10 handpumps on the bar counter and beers on were from Elgoods, Milestone, Wychwood, Barnsley ( Acorn Bitter plus IPA ). Also on was Black Country Pig on the Wall and several real ciders. The pub is listed in the CAMRA 2012 Good Beer Guide.

This pub makes a good double header along with the Olde Black Boy.

You can't go wrong with 3 Real Ciders and 5 Real Ales. I loved my time at Nellys.

This 2011 Good Beer Guide pub is a sister pub to Walters close by. It is a comfortable pub to be in, and the beer was in good condition. When we visited earlier this month we chose Windsor & Eton Conqueror and Marston Moor Sapper. Staff friendly and knowledgable about the ales, and allowed me to try before buying.
