Blackthorn _ left this review about The Rising Sun

Recently refurbished after a spell of closure, this has had a somewhat chequered history of late with many changes of management and a slightly unsavoury reputation despite it’s pleasant village location. It’s now part of the same group that has the Bear & Swan at Chew Magna among others, so is hopefully the future looks more positive. The car park has been enlarged taking away part of the garden, but this is still a good size and somewhat underutilised at present, although they have added a small children’s play area.

Internally it’s been extended to the right to create a dining area and has been opened out in to one large L-shaped room having quite a contemporary feel with pale khaki green paint on the woodwork and fresh white paint elsewhere. Flooring is a mixture of parquet wood, grey slate tiles and carpeting. A small brick fire-place was off to one side with a wood burning stove and there were a couple of old photographs on the wall, although these were quite minimal. Seating is mostly conventional tables and chairs, with a couple of Chesterfield sofas and a few bar stools. Some shiny copper lamp shades hung above the bar.

The menu contained a decent looking selection of food that was a step-up from your normal pub grub, with most of the main courses being around the £15 mark. There were nonetheless pub staples such as fish & chips, burger, rack of ribs and so on available, as well as a few more adventurous options, including several steak and fish choices. We will certainly return to check out the food at some point.

Beers on tap were Flying Monk Elmers, GWB Hambrook and Butcombe, whilst ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Dry, Thatcher’s Haze and Ashton Press, the latter being in both the still and sparkling varieties. Overall I quite liked this, although it’s certainly not what you’d call a cosy old local, which is perhaps the genre that I usually tend to favour. Nonetheless, I hope they do well. With the New Inn opposite having been closed for some years now, a decent pub in the centre of Backwell is very much needed.
