thanks for taking your time to come in and check us out, we were very suprised to see a review less than a week after opening, quite impressed
Please feel free to come back as we are only just opened and will be pushing the sports viewing on the 3 x 50 inch screens and 120 inch main screen, have dj's on friday and saturday nights and will be basically tweaking how she is as time goes on. There are also facilities for live bands, but we havent even thought of that side of things just yet.
We also added a pool table and more funiture this week.
The kitchen will also be fully operational in the next few weeks, so we will have more news on the food soon.
All the cellar gear and pythons are brand new, so you guarantee everything is served at the right temperature, in branded glassware and in a perfectly clean and hygienic environment, which is so important as beer is a food item.
Its always a tough one when you enter a new community as the main watering hole, but I think we have this one serving the locals well. We aim for the daily drinkers and locals and have to get numbers through the door for this to work, hence the special pricing.
I wouldnt refer to the customers as 'lowest common denominator' though, as these are the daily drinkers that keep pubs alive. we have many such places across west yorkshire and if it wasnt for the reliable daily 'old boys' many of these places would be closed and no longer be part of a social structure within impoverished neighbourhoods. saying that, it looks like wakefield is having some great investment recently, and the council and police are certainly dilligent with us.
its too easy to go to the supermarket and buy even cheaper beer, but its the pub that binds the community and gives it the social glue.

Long standing Wakefield pub, recently re-opened after a period of closure. Its previous incarnation was as the gay friendly venue Bar Zeus, but it would appear to be a mainstream pub once more. Originally known as the New Dolphin Inn, it’s also had spells as Billy Down Steps and The Wakefield Pride down the years. A solid, but attractive looking, street-corner pile, it’s brick built, but with some fine stone detailing, including a pedimented door surround on heavy scroll brackets.
Internally, it’s an open plan L-shaped space, with a raised area at either end; the larger, right hand one doubling as a performance area, complete with double height ceiling and disco lighting. A good amount looks to have been spent on the refurb, including an attractive wooden bar and some decent fixtures and fittings. There are lots of wall benches, traditional tables and chairs, plus a central high table with stools. Walls are lined with innocuous modern art prints and photos of old Wakefield. Almost inevitably these days, there are a couple of flat screen monitors, tuned to Sky, and a large drop down screen above the stage.
At the bar there were the usual T-bar suspects, plus two beers on hand pull – Black Sheep Bitter and Clark’s ‘Westgate Gold’. The latter was surprisingly good and a very reasonable £1.95. That sort of price and the fact that the pub is adjacent to local ‘spoons The Six Chimneys probably tells you where the Wakey Tavern is pitched. (As does Worthington Smoothflow at £1.00 a pint before midday, rising in increments at regular intervals to its ‘full’ price of £1.75, at 7pm, until closing.) It was certainly doing brisk business on the Wednesday lunchtime I called, with a predominantly over forties male clientele. As the pub had only been open for five days, on my visit, I reckon a good number of curious folk had wandered in from next door.
My first impressions were those of an okay-ish, lowest common denominator sort of place, but with very little to make me want to call again. Having said that, I’ll probably give it a second chance in a couple of months to see if anything’s changed. I suspect not.
