Standing looking very sad and lonely in an urban waste land, a Victorian range of shops across the road, a church on the other side and a couple of detached 19th century buildings in front across a desolate space, one an undertaker’s in a poetic juxtaposition, a monstrous bingo hall for company next door. Not open Monday or Tuesday when I was in Oldham.

A change of landlord and a change of attitude since my last visit. The pub is now much more music orientated with a DJ at weekends playing oldies. It's one large room at the front, with another smaller room at the rear woth a pool table, both served by a central bar. 3 handpumps on the bar with Lees Bitter doubled up alongside Lees Dragonfire. The Dragonfire was a well kept pint. The clientele now seem to be similar to those who use Whittles across the road judging by my Friday early evening vist, which is no bad thing. A much improved pub.

This place has a bit of a sterile atmosphere, at least it did at 6.30 on a Saturday evening when we called in. Very modern bright interior with large pictures on the walls (probably from The Range or Wilkinsons) which is not unpleasant. I had a pint of the Lees Bitter but I had to take my pint back to the bar as it was foul, it was changed with no problem, but the second pint wasn't great either, even though it was from a different pump. When I got back to my seat the other half said "This wines off". Back to the bar again. When I told the landlord he shouted "What do you want ME to do about it?" I pointed out that as the landlord I would expect him to change it and apologise rather than get stroppy. This went down like the proverbial "lead budgie". He did change it though and after smelling the bottle threw the rest of it away. Still no apology though. Won't be getting another chance I'm afraid.
