A re-visit, on what may have been one of the busiest days in Southsea, D Day commemoration, Red Arrows display, you get the idea.

Every pub & cafe was heaving, except this one. OK it is a bit off the beaten track, but so are two others near by, and they had loads of customers, we were looking for a pub lunch ideally, not a real ale festival

The building is the same, clean, tidy, pleasant. Recently changed hands [about 2 months back]

No draught ales, a couple of hand pulls but just for show, all offerings are keg fizz

I had Stowford Press cider, which for me was Hobson's choice, JS Smooth or this? And it took the barman ages to even get that, just overflowing glass into the ullage tray

As stated, really only looking for a sit down, drink and a bite to eat

We ordered cheese & tom sarnie, and tuna baguette

30 minutes later, in an empty bar, we were only customers, we were still waiting for our cold food, not hard to make a cheeses sarnie is it?

TBH I am not surprised this place was empty on a very busy tourist day, it would need someone like Mary Porthouse or Gordon Ramsey to give it a kick up the bum

Sorry, but will have to mark it way down now

I will not rush back

Wow
Styles itself as a Gastro bar & boutique hotel, my initial impression was wow!
This is so far removed from the normal Pompey pub, it is a pleasure, more like a members club, leather seats, nice bar, dining area, no expense has been spared IMO, even the loo is posh

Food not tried, more of a sit down meal than bar snack place, I expect it would be good though if rest of pub is any guide

Worth a visit if only to see what is possible and give some support for effort

Previous comments - No longer The Owtback bar, returned to it's former name of Ashby's

Despite the address the entrance is from Ashby Place not Auckland Road
