A Smith and Jones pub in a former church hall on a busy high street. It's atmospheric and well decorated, some original architectural features including the stained glass windows have been retained, but it suffers from having no real ale. The customers appear to be the younger end of North End's population, and the noise from the jukebox reflects that. The heating appeared to have been turned up full, so it was uncomfortably warm. The single large room with its upstairs gallery provides plenty of space for vertical and seated drinking. The staff appeared a bit clueless but were friendly enough. The lack of ale makes it unlikely that I shall return.

Beer lovers have scored a victory after a Portsmouth pub was saved from closure.
The Lanyard, in London Road, North End, has been snapped up by publican Steve Hudson.
Mr Hudson, who also runs The Shepherds Crook in Fratton and Drift Bar, in Southsea, plans to re-open The Lanyard towards the end of January.
