Popped back with a mate of mine who has moved in nearby to show him the better pubs on the Reading-Gatwick line. Nothing obvious to report in terms of changes and it seems to be doing well, with a fair selection of regional stagers on the pumps. My Mad Goose Purity was in good nick (NBSS 3.5). The walk to get here from the station isn’t the best but worth it if you are doing the upper-end of the line towards Reading. Quiz held Thu & Sun. Beer is apparently cheaper on a Monday. Is not GBG’24 listed which I find mildly surprising.

A locals pub in the middle class suburbs. Once you have located the hard-to-find entrance you’ll find it has been blandized inside with a snot green Farrow & Ball colour scheme though there are still some separated areas. The large mirror depicting the pub's name behind the bar is a nice touch. Very surprised to find five pumps with four on; GK Amarillo, Fuller's Sticky Wicket, TT Boltmaker and Butcombe Original. I went for halves at the latter two which were competitively priced, the Butcombe coming out fairly well but the TT was rather green. All beers had a label with tasting notes and prices clearly displayed. Quite an enjoyable stop and is close enough to the station (should you be willing to traverse the pedestrian flyover of the A331 junction and dodgy wooded area) to make getting off the train for it a reasonable decision. Rated 6.5

The squirrel is basically a mid-range food-led family pub with a standard "pub Classic" menu, a large open room with a central bar, lots of seating in evidence along with flashing fruit machines and the like. I was given some hope at the sight of 5 hand pumps on the bar until I saw the selection, Greene King IPA,Old Speckled Hen, London Pride and Doom Bar along with a Hammerpot beer coming soon, I certainly wasn't going to wait for that and had half a Stella. I don't enjoy pubs like this and do not expect to return.
