Hall & Woodhouse roadside pub, traditional bar doors on entering labelled ‘This’ and ‘That’ but both lead to the same opened-out bar area. Check carpet, wonky low ceiling and beams, brick and wood bar front, quasi-rustic feel, not bad. As is the way these days, a formal dining area is off-limits to the regular punter. Best selling point was the nice patio suntrap out the front. Three H&W ales on; Tanglefoot, Sussex Best (poor, suspect an over-worked cask breather) and First Call, alongside Westons Rosies cider. Sun-trap patio out the front. Ot’s OK but the beer let it down. 5.5

The New Inn is a fairly large two bar pub with a hotel attached. Its an old country styled pub with plenty of oak beams in evidence, there seems to be no rel distinction between the bars apart from the names, one is called This Bar, the other, That Bar. Its Hall & Woodhouse owned so expect Badger beers, I didn't spot any guest beers, three available on my visit, these were , First Gold,First Call and Tanglefoot. I'm not a fan of Badger beers and as such the pub did little for me, more suited to hotel guests and passing diners.

Large place with a hotel attached. Perfectly adequate although a tad expensive.
Too many kids in there for my liking but apart from that it's ok.

Coincidentally, I was staying at the New Inn and sitting behind Mr Marshall and his party when they arrived in the bar. Being in the countryside, the New Inn is a popular stopping point for walkers, some of whom relax, use the facilities, expect tap water free of charge and leave without spending a single penny. Having just paid my water bill, it is hardly a revelation when I say that it most certainly does not come out of the tap free!

For this reason, the landlord no longer serves tap water at the bar. He does however sell both still and sparking water, which he quite politely offered Mr Marshall’s party when they arrived. He also pointed out that water would be provided at the table free of charge, should they choose to dine. You cannot have one rule for some and not others, but rather than accepting this, Mr Marshall’s party chose to goad the landlord about the matter to the point of distraction… I’m surprised the landlord didn’t lose the will to live!

Anyway, on to my review: The New Inn is my first choice accommodation when working down south. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the food is of good quality and reasonably priced and the pub has a cosy and welcoming atmosphere.
Even more so in the winter when the three open fires are roaring.

Even when very busy, there is a sense of calm and order about the place; everything always seems to be under control, which I guess is largely due to the efficiency of its management and the quality of its staff. The Landlord has a good sense of humour, which is great, if like me, you enjoy a bit of bar-stool banter when on one’s own for the evening.

I would thoroughly recommend the New Inn; it’s a pity I haven’t found somewhere to equal it when staying in other parts of the country.

We visited this pub on Sunday August 2nd.
The gentleman who greeted us was tall with a bald head.
we were made to feel most unwelcome.
We sorry but of all the pubs we have visited whilst travelling around the UK this is the one we could NOT recommend.
Although we ordered some food we were point blank refused a drink of tap water.
Soup was described as being accompanied by 'crusty bread'. This was not the case .. the bread was a very ordinary slice of white bread. not crusty at all. when we decided to then not order any dessert, we were told ' you are difficult to please' strange ? just because we did not fancy a dessert having seen the selection.
Landlord is rude and over familiar.
could not recommend until attitudes change.
