Located in Charlton, a few minutes out of Andover. A traditional stone building with a small thatched bit on the right side. Someone here is a Ford Escort fan, two late 80’s models were in the car park. Two rooms within; front is the public bar, pool table (only 50p and had a space age digital read-out!), darts, papers, impressively full trophy cabinet and some old boys playing crib. Southampton FC memorabilia above the bar. Rear room more loungey, modern wallpaper and aimed at dining (only accessible by going outside). Side and rear patio. Papers available. Five ales, all from the GK range. My Golden Hen was decent even if not one of the day’s better beers. Nice atmosphere in this one and I wouldn’t have a problem revisiting. Looking at the review below, there have either been some big changes for the better or one of us got remarkably un/lucky

E TA left this review about The Royal Oak

The Royal Oak is a large GK pub on the outskirts of town, just off the main Newbury Road. There is a small bar to the front, with pool table and dartboard, used mainly by locals, as evinced by the fact that no-one would serve me here. To the side is the main bar/restaurant which has been extended into a large wooden-floored annex at the back. There is also a good sized garden full of smokers. There is a mix of flooring throughout, and there are exposed beams in the main area, which combne with a faux-rural decor to give it the look and feel of a genuine Beefeater. Staff were very inefficient and devoid of personality despite the manager's real attempt to motivate them, while the clientele - of whom there many - were mostly rude, loud or just unpleasant. Three ales on, but due to waiting times I was only able to acquire one in the 90 minutes I was there. The beer I had was GK IPA which was bland and over-gassed. In its current guise I have no desire to come back here.
