Tris C left this review about The Stagg Inn

Once the Balance Inn until 1833, the Stagg Inn is situated in a picturesque village in the north-west corner of Herefordshire, close to the Welsh border.
On approach, there’s a tidy car park and beautifully landscaped garden with a mixed interior displaying some aged natural beams with rough cream plaster infill, jarring somewhat with the pale modern boarded floor and scorched wood bar back, though maybe the stone bar front is original; the rough beige hessian wall coverings (see pics) weren’t original, nor the trendy black and white prints.
This is a serious gasropub with citations aplenty on their website; it’s probably the most gastro of gastropubs in the county, my 7oz fillet steak served well, with truffle mash and red wine jus but at a London-centric £34, a two-course meal for two with two drinks coming in at just north of £100 with tip and not really worth the money, though served by charming staff. For the record, there was just the one cask ale in the form of Butty Bach at again, a London-centric £2.50 a half and on good form.
I’m reliably informed that this is better than the nearby Batemans and it’s probably the best place to eat in the county, but the price belies the quality. And hearing a dog barking loudly whilst seated in the dining area hardly made for a restful experience.

first class, expensive but worth it, the food was exceptional, friendly staff. quiet no piped music, so relaxing. also B+B at the pub and the old Rectory opposite. Well worth a visit.
