As described below, it’s a friendly local, pleasantly devoid of the tourists. It was noisy though, the music being somewhat piercing. The banter had a nice ring to it. There was a barrel of water at the front for the dogs, gaming machines in the bar and a smoking terrace at the back. Two dry pumps on the bar and another dispensing Landlord. Also available were Inch’s cider and Neck Oil. I’d be happy to come back for a pint and to include on a crawl.

A thirties style street corner pub in the heart of the historic centre of Whitstable, close to the shops on one side, and all the marine paraphernalia of oyster central on the other. While we live less than an hour from the town, this is the first time I'd been here socially since the late seventies: I don't think I'd have dared to come into this pub then!
Now, however, the Albert is, as my fellow scribe reported, an unpretentious local,catering for shall we say a slightly less fancy trade. On our lunchtime visit on a mildish January Saturday, the pub was comfortably full, with drinkers and family groups. On the bar, alongside the usual fizz founts, were three handpumps, two of which badged with the welcome Gadds rhomboidal pumpclip.Gadds' don't seem to trade in my part of Kent, so I am always glad to try their beer when in East Kent:their seasonal Oatmeal Stout was beautifully soft and chocolaty, and Number 7 a delicious session pale.Our fish 'n' chips were good:nothing fancy.
I rather enjoyed this pub: a slight bohemian vibe,not as achingly trendy as some in the town.

This small local’s pub is situatd in the heart of town and appears to be quite ordinary on first sight but it is this no nonsense unpretentious approach that makes the Albert a regular stop on our annual Oyster Festival pub crawl.
The L-shaped interior has had a bit of a spruce in the last couple of years and whilst it doesn’t look as old fashioned as it once did, it has for me lost a bit of its character. The small end of the pub has a modern brick fireplace and dart board whilst the extended end has a much cleaner look since the decorators called and some of the clutter has been replaced with new seascape pictures alongside various old pictures of the pub. A couple of small TV’s have also been added since my last visit.
The beer garden to one side has also had some recent work done to it and the entrance from the street has now been blocked off so access is now only through the pub itself. It can be a bit of a sun trap despite now being fully enclosed and if I’m not mistaken, it has been widened although it all seems very bare and not particularly attractive. Bamboo screens hide much of the brickwork but it really needs some potted plants or something to make it a bit more appealing.
There are usually 3 ales available, a couple of standard beers plus a guest (currently Tetleys Mild). The quality has on our last couple of visits been below par although they immediately changed the barrel when we queried our pint and even provided a taster from the new barrel to ensure that we were happy with it before puring a fresh pint. Service has always been first rate and we always get served quickly even when it is packed with Festival frolickers.
The Albert is a pub that is easy to bypass in favour of the more spacious pubs nearby but we have always been made to feel welcome here even though we only ever pop in for a solitary pint once a year.
