Laid out as described by Roger, below, though not run as well nowadays. It was quite scruffy and chaotic when we visited, and we didn’t feel at all welcome. The young staff were pretty offhand with us. Worst, there was no real ale on and no decent cider, so megakeg was the only option. I’m not tempted to return.

Until the opening of the new Wetherspoons, the Duke was probably the largest pub in Whitstable. There has been an inn on this site for 300 years but the current building was rebuilt in 1878 following a fire that destroyed the original. There have been several restorations and improvements over the years but it still retains an element of character from its formative years.
The interior is divided into a main bar with a large side section although the dividing corridor which is still evident in the floor patterns has been partly removed giving easy access between the two rooms. The main bar is quite spacious and comfortable with partly tiled, partly carpeted flooring and arched windows. The rear room (possibly the original dining room / banqueting Hall) is very light and airy thanks to its bright colour scheme, pine floor and the natural light that floods through the skylight in the roof. There are a few prints and large mirrors but the centerpiece is a large model ship perched at one end of the room. There is also an attractive courtyard with additional seating outside in good weather and a separate function room in the outbuildings (presumably old stables).
The beers are from the usual Shepherd Neame range but always decent enough quality and for the most part, a wider selection than some of the other Shep’s pubs in town and even have the occasional guest beer available.
The Duke is always very busy during the annual Oyster Festival and seems to be a gathering point for the Morris dancers. The staff do generally keep on top of things and if you can bag a table it’s a pretty decent place to soak up the Festival atmosphere. At other times it can be a bit hollow but always worth popping in if passing by.
