First time here for 5 years. I never rated it before but it really has fallen from grace now. Two ales and a cider on, my pint was in reasonable nick but my mates Hobgoblin Gold was vinegar, the barman said himself “it has been on for a while”! Also not impressed by the noisy group dominating the pub at 2 in the afternoon and plaguing it with utter shite music either. A free jukebox is never a good idea…

other reviews pretty much spot on. a dark and very dingy one room bar popular with greasy students and people refusing to move on from the 70s. it has four real ales on but they tasted pretty crap today to be honest. I like a rock pub but this does little for me.

A very student friendly basement bar. A single room with booth-like seats on either side of the room and a long table in the middle. The booths each have small jukeboxes on the walls though they don't work. 4 handpumps for real ale. Its all a bit crap to be honest. Go in only to say you've been there.

The pub was quiet on our early evening visit, apart from a few noisy students near the entrance after a good afternoons session. On such a sunny day it didn't inspire us to walk down a flight of steps and sit and drink for long in this cellar bar. The Cheshire Brewery Spitting Feathers Special Ale was good and reasonably priced, I was more concerned whether the glass I was drinking out of was cleaned properly or not. Wouldn't return.

This is a basic back street pub and live music venue with a strong student following. Entering through a front courtyard with several picnic benches and rather unexpectedly, a plough, you descend a short flight of steps to the main room which has the feel of a cellar bar due to the almost complete lack of natural light. The interior of this simple rectangular room is all dark wood flooring and exposed brick walls with a few booths created by banquettes running down both sides and a row of long tables positioned in the middle. The walls have a number of unusual curved recesses which have been filled with mirrors which have photos of The Beatles stuck on them. The servery is roughly opposite the front door and to the right there is an open kitchen and wide corridor with a large ‘Rubber Soul’ artwork. Two TV screens were showing the afternoon’s big match between Liverpool and Arsenal and the crowd were rather boisterous to the point that a number of customers turned straight around and left without making it to the bar. A spiral staircase at the end of the room leads up to the live music venue, but I didn’t bother to explore that far.
Four hand pulls offered Lancaster Red, Cross Bay Nations Bitter, Phoenix White Monk and Thwaites Original, whilst the keg range includes Cain’s Pilsner at £1.95. Unfortunately my half of the Nations Bitter was most unpleasant, perhaps because the line hadn’t been pulled through, but it gave me a good excuse to get away from the rather violent atmosphere the football was generating. Food is available and an excellent value, student friendly menu is displayed on a large board next to the bar.
I don’t mind pubs that are a bit scruffy and run down, as I think it can add a bit of character to a place, but this pub didn’t really do it for me and I think I’d be unlikely to make a return with so many other good options nearby. That said, had I arrived on a non football day and received a better beer, maybe my feelings would be entirely different.

2011 Good Beer Guide pub with decent real ale range and we chose M & B Blueberry and Liverpool Organic Johnny Handsome. No problem with either of the beers. Unable to get seats as it was quite full, and we stood by a shelf near the kitchen chatting to the chef.

An interesting cellar bar with constant music chosen by customers from juke box selectors located at each table. The tables round the edge of the room are set out a bit like small private booths seating four people, there is also a long line of tables down the centre of the room. These tables have small tiles picking out the names of uninspiring drinks like Stella or Blackthorn cider, but they fit in with the general ambience of the place. The room upstairs was closed but is reached via a spiral staircase in the corner of the cellar. There is also the covered yard where you enter, which is normally packed in summer. 4 good ales from smaller fairly local breweries and my Pheonix Hopsack was in top form. Service was ok. Carlsberg, Murphys and Guinness also on sale. The menu looks interesting, innovative and different. The Pilgrim is very popular with students particularly the tea cosy wearing variety.

==Autumn 2010 update==

nothing much changes in the Pilgrim, the table mosaics have gone but the beer is just as good and it's kept it's place in the Good Beer Guide (2011).

Well named, it is pretty grim. Full of students and downright dirty. Sticky tables & floors, glasses & bottles everywhere, just not good enough, I can't imagine why anyone would ever want to eat here, given the state of everywhere else what must the kitchen be like. Four real ales on the bar, I had a pint of Leeds Funfair, it was poor. Had another pint of Funfair in Rochdale last night, it was good, so definitely down to the pub. Why on earth is this place in the GBG 2010? Don't go unless you like students and grime.
