A nice, comfortable and spacious hotel bar on the Buttlands. Unfortunately, the beer choice has gone downhill a bit and when I visited in November the only ale on offer was Greene King IPA at £4.95 a pint.

Upmarket hotel/restaurant/bar located at the end of the Buttlands (a sort of village green and not called Butt Cracks as my son insisted).

As you enter, there is a central corridor. Lounges to the left were for hotel guests only, whilst there were 3 rooms for drinkers (and possibly diners) to the right-hand side. The corridor continued down past a tiny lounge room on the right-hand side and toilets on the left to a more formal dining room.

The bar serves 2 of the 3 rooms to the right-hand side of the building. Bar staff were busy pulling through one of their 2 real ales (Wherry & Norfolk Topper) when we arrived.

We did consider eating here, but £30 for a steak or £23 for a piece of pork was somewhat more than I was willing to pay for a meal. Drinks prices alone almost require a mortgage.

We appear to be creating more of a two tier society in this country. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see how the other half live.

An attractive, well run, Georgian hotel on the corner of Buttlands, a delightful Georgian square.
It's a big and busy hotel run by the small and local Flying Kiwi chain but despite the size, there are function rooms to the left, a dining room to the rear and hotel accomodation in both the main building and behind, the bar, to the right of the front door, feels like a proper bar rather than a hotel add on.
There are tables outside at the front where you can watch the various activities happening on the tree lined green - dogs squatting, 4x4's reversing their laden bike racks into each other and kids playing footy, tennis and badminton. There's also a quieter terrace at the back.
The bar itself is wooden floored with modern furniture and comfy with friendly service.
Beers on were Jo C's Bitter Old Bustard and Norfolk Kiwi and Adnams Samba City. Not a huge range but both the Samba City and BOB went down very well. There's also a wide selection of gins which many of the hotel guests seemed to be enjoying.
A GBG regular that's just about worth it's entry for the ale quality rather than variety.
Wells isn't blessed with a wide variety of good alehouses but this is one of the best.

Will Larter left this review about The Crown Hotel

It's a pity that only one of the local Jo C's brewery beers were on offer, as their beer range looks quite interesting but I wasn't in the mood for a stout, so that left me with a choice of Broadside or Jester from Adnams, or Woodforde's Bure Gold. I settled for a half of each of the Adnams, and the round of three halves for me and my partner came to exactly £6, which seems a little steep to me. This is quite a pleasant bar, or would be if they weren't playing such annoying music on the sound system. I'd probably visit again, but I couldn't guarantee staying for a second round.

Civilised hotel in posher part of town, certainly a different world to the bustle of the quayside. Most customers probably come for the reatsurant, but it has a nice traditional bar with a couple of ales from the nearby Jo C's brewery, which probably caused its 2013 Good Beer Guide listing.
