Old Boots left this review about The Nag's Head

Grey and white painted pub, entering through the porch I went to the left as that appeared the only public entrance. Once through the inner door it was a large split level room with a counter to the right extending halfway along the room, a variety of seating and screens were available in here. The counter held two T-bars of fairly usual keggy stuff and there were two unclipped handpulls, I asked for cask and was told Black Sheep. Ordering a pint the barmaid disappeared to the right and when she returned I was presented with the cloudiest pint of it I’ve ever had, smelling carefully there was no hint of vinegar and the pint was poor but not in any way undrinkable. The “Cask Ales always available” sign didn’t lie. The beer came from a back side public bar with two pulls, two T-bars darts and pool, it’s through an unmarked door straight ahead in the entrance porch, There’s a cheeky pub dog called Bruno who craves attention.

The Nags Head has a lounge with split-level seating and a large TV for Sky Sports to the left of the entrance. Both of the hand pumps on the bar were reverse clipped and the bar was empty so I went into the long and thin public bar that runs up the right of the pub. The bar counter up the left faces a carpeted seating area where a noisy group of cricket players/fans were sitting. Laminate runs up to the rear where high tables can be found up the right and high booths up the left. At the very rear is a pool table. The television was showing rugby highlights. Standard and premium keg was available, and one of the two hand pumps was in operation drawing Black Sheep’s Best. This pub was just around the corner from my hotel, I only visited it once.

This pub is full of potential but sadly on my visit showed all the signs of a pub in an inevitable downward spiral to closure with the to let sign draped across the front doing nothing to help matters.

But once inside the pub is a pretty tidy old place, fully carpeted and plenty of nice cushioned seating. But it was dead! not a sole in the place except me and my party of four. Admittedly it was a Wednesday but come half past eight I would have expected a few more customers. this enivitably led to a very dull and quiet atmosphere.

there were four hand pumps with John smiths and Doombar (both £3.10) both being repeated, i had a john Smiths and it was kept very well and was a very nice drink.

This pub is a great shame as it has all the features off a good village pub but without customs will see certain closure in the future, sadly at current rates I give it a year unless something can change.

** update September 2016
new owners, new lease of life , bustling and lively at 4 on a Saturday afternoon, they now have 2 guests beers and a cask cider along side the old guard of cask John smiths and doom bar and he only pub in york to sell John smiths magnet bitter! £3.25 and a danm sight better than the smooth flow crap, not sure it will replace my real ale but it's worth a try to sample this hard to find beer! this pub is improving

I thought this was a really nice pub with a lounge at the front and a bar running to the bach on the right hand side.
The lounge was furnished in a way that i like and there was also a seating area up a couple of steps.
There were two real ales on which were York Yorkshire Terrier this was very nice there was also John Smiths cask on i thought this was a really decent pub and i would be very happy to come here again.
