This is yet another excellent York pub. This one has the look of a fairly small backstreet locals' pub, well away from the main tourist areas. And in a lot of respects it's all the better for that. Well described by others the only thing I would add is the unusual matchboard panelled ceiling, and small hatch to the bar, in the quieter back room where Mrs R and I sat. There was some decent beer here as well; I had the Timothy Taylor Boltmaker, which I thought was OK but perhaps not quite good enough for the CAMRA accolades it has received.

This is another one deserving of a revisit.

Another fine York pub, a small venue this, the pub name is inscribed on frosted glass on the lower part of the windows and again on a seriously attractive panel of stained glass on the entrance door. Carpeted inside, there is a dark wood boarded ceiling, regular style seating at small tables with banquettes on the front wall. A small separate rear room was rather plain in appearance. Black and white photos, mainly of river scenes, there is a dartboard but you might need a few hands to shift stuff around to actually chuck some arrows. Snacks available, there were the usual York "proper" pork pies and I saw Scotch eggs, no idea if dinners are served. There is a bit of an outdoor area and the gents are outside too.
The cask ales were Leeds Pale, Timothy Taylor's Boltmaker, Rudgate Ruby Mild, Wold Top Wold Gold and guest ale, Liverpool Craft Beer Co Quokka. A cider was on from Jack Ratt. Another very good and friendly welcoming York pub.

A traditional pub just outside the city walls, it consists of a larger room running across the front of the pub with etched glass windows bearing the pub’s name and a couple of smaller rooms at the rear, as well as a patio area for some alfresco drinking or smoking. The landlord seemed a friendly chap and was unfazed by the group of twenty or so who suddenly descended on his relatively small pub.

The snug at the rear of the pub had wood panelling that had been painted red on the lower part of the walls and cream paintwork up above as well as more dark wood panelling on the ceiling. There were a few old black and white photos of the river on the walls as well as a map of York from 1849. Food does not appear to be a major feature here, although I did spot a few pork pies and picked eggs on the end of the bar.

Beers on tap were Timothy Taylor Boltmaker, Ruby Mild, Wold Gold, Leeds Pale and Quokka from the Liverpool Craft Beer Co. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Black Rat Scrumpy. All in all I thought this was a friendly and decent pub, and well worth popping in if in the vicinity.

Enjoyed our day's activities finishing at this pub on Wednesday, especially when we found Brewmeister Ten on the bar, a superb 10.1% beer and a new brewery for us. Good choice of beers always available and our other beer was from Yorkshire Dales, Arkengarthdale.

Thanks to Rob's tip on opening times, we timed our visit here in advance on our Monday crawl around York. Eight ales to choose from, I went for the Wold Top Wold Gold and Brass Castle Fireship. This is a well run pub and the staff were friendly. On the food front, there were a few lads at the bar tucking into pies with a slice of black pudding on top, never seen them before.

Tucked away between the river walkway and its sister pub the swan. The pub serves 5 real ales has a dartboard and is dog friendly. Makes a good triple header with the nearby swan & golden ball.Part of a group that includes the swan, the volunteer and the woolpack.

Just around the corner from its sister pub The Swan. It was bought and turned into a freehouse in 2010. There's a small room as you enter with a larger one behind the bar. There's also a large courtyard at the back. 5 handpumps on the bar serving Leeds Pale, Ilkley Gold, Rudgate Ruby Mild and a couple of changing guests. The pint I had was in very good nick and the landlady and the couple of regulars that were in, were all very friendly. It's a very neat little pub that we'll definitely call in again. Note that it doesn't open until 5 on weekdays, so go to The Swan first as it opens at 4.

Our first time in this pub although it is the nearest pub to our camp site. Heard it was doing more for real ale drinkers now, and was not disappointed. Enjoyed Wold Top Wold Gold while chatting to folk both sides of the bar. Nice beer garden at the back. Holding a beer festival of 40 beers jointly with the Swan up the road next weekend, but sadly we will have moved on by then.

March 11 update.

Called in last night on our way back to the caravan site, and it is still a comfortable friendly pub with a good choice of ales available. Just what a local should be. Enjoyed Copper Dragon Freddie Trueman and Abbeydale Moonshine. Football on the TV.

Old Boots left this review about The Slip Inn

Not quite a hidden gem but maybe overshadowed by the listed Swan further up the road, but this is a super local pub with some very finely kept ales, only a choice of four, Leeds Pale, Rudgate Ruby Mild, Wold Top Falling Stone and Salamnder as a guest, but probably in the best condition you will find anywhere in York. Décor is typical of pubs in the 1980s/1990s but nice enough, a games machine and a screen showing sport, this being Yorkshire it was cricket, on the standard pub scheme of dark below and cream above on traditional anaglypta and tongue and groove. A friendly pub with a good local following plus those in the know combining a visit here with a trip to the better known Swan.
