Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Black Swan

Listed as one of CAMRA's Heritage pubs, the Black Swan looks excellent from the oustside with its timber frame, whilst the 3-roomed interior is full of character.

There are 2 rooms to the left-hand side of the entrance corridor, with the bar itself forming the dividing point. In addition, there is a further larger room off to the right-hand side with no access to the bar. Stone floors and low beamed ceilings make it all feel traditional.

Handpulls can be found in the rear room. Timothy Taylor Landlord is the regular ale. Guests were Vocation Heart and Soul & Theakston Old Peculier. In addition, they had a Lilley's Gingerbread Cider.

As with most York pubs, it was quiet on a Monday evening with just 2 or 3 people in each room. However, I had chosen this place as a convenient final calling point before attending a game at York's new LNER Community Stadium. The bus stop with park and ride buses to the stadium is just opposite the pub. However, I wish I'd stayed for a second in the warmth of the pub as the every 10-minute bus service took 30 minutes to arrive and I got to the other end only to find that the game had been postponed due to a frozen pitch!

Regardless, I'm surprised that this pub has not been reviewed more often. It was one of my favourite new discoveries in York on this visit.

a proper ancient pub that genuinely feels ancient inside. It’s well worth a visit for that alone but the well kept Old Peculier helps too. It has a big beer garden at the back which rarely gets full so this is an ideal spot for a warm afternoon. Food operation dominating today but of the traditional home cooked variety as opposed to tedious gastro.

A nice historical old pub, just far enough off the usual tourist trails to avoid the worst excesses and maintain a proper pub feel. A splendidly ancient old building - all beams, wood panelling and stone floors. There are three rooms off a central corridor: a good bar, a front room with a dart board (if you can shift the diners) and a front restaurant room, with more comfortable chairs. Upstairs there is a function room used for live music, while at the back is a fair-sized patio, partly under cover and with an overflow across the car park. The car park itself is not large and partly reserved during the day, with all manner of dire warnings posted, but is free for patrons if you can find a space, though do check at the bar. Beerwise there is a fair selection from Theakstons plus occasional others, such as York Guzzler and Landlord. Ale condition was good. Food is very good, very traditional (including such things as pigeon pie and rabbit stew) and in very large portions.

Old style Theakston’s managed pub with a lot of history to it. 3 separate areas, the 2 rooms at the front are for diners with the food smelling good as we arrived.

The snug back bar where we parked ourselves, had 8 hand pumps on with the 4 ales being repeated across the pumps. These ales were Timothy Taylor’s Landlord & Golden Best, Theakston’s Lightfoot & Old Peculiar. The Golden Best was a very nice pint and the wife enjoyed her half of Lightfoot.

Large open fire with all the original fixtures and fittings.

A very interesting pub that I hadn’t visited before, note the wonky stairs up to the women’s toilets.

Really nice old York pub and probably one of the oldest in the city. HAs a really nice traditional interior and good range of ales on the bar but unfortunately only one or two rotate. Landlord, Theakstons XB Golden pippin and Old perculier are their main range. The beer quality is top draw but sadly this has now leaped down the tourist trap route, £3.80 for a landlord is criminal in a nice old fashioned pub in my opinion. I also have a dislike for the manners of the bar staff, after asking to have my beer poured into another glass due to the one i was given being red hot (probably fresh from a wash) i was shrieked at and was given no apology. I would have thought an old "friendly" pub like this would not have situations like this arise, especially when the beer is very nicely kept. Sadly the price will now keep me from going, The only way I can object is to vote with my feet.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Black Swan

Circa 1417, the Swan occupies a medieval timber framed house and includes a 17th Century staircase, fireplace and oak panelling. The pub consists of two front lounges, one of which has a hatch to the servery. The main bar and lounge is situated at the rear and has an inglenook fireplace, plus open beams. Five ales on, I went for the Theakston XB. The barman was smartly dressed with shirt and tie and had great knowledge of the pub and his beers. Serves food.

Old Boots left this review about The Black Swan

A venerable old pub, originally a private dwelling for some of York's better quality residents. There are lots of black beams, rudimentary coffered ceilings and panelled walls. Three main rooms; two at the front and one at the back with the bar counter and 4 handpulls largely mainstream beers (Deuchars, Pride) with a local choice from Copper Dragon. The back bar has more of a public bar atmosphere, the front rooms are more dining oriented, the one to the left having a nice original fireplace and a cabinet of interesting bottles and stuff, the furnishing is a mix of settles with chairs and tables. A busy and popular pub, the Gents smells of shrimps according to my notes.
