Will Larter left this review about The Old Rock

It was disappointing, having read Alan's review below, to find that this pub has now reverted to being keg only. And what keg! My drinking companion, Alan's brother, tried the John Smith Smooth Crap but couldn't finish his half, while I struggled with an equally bad M&B Mild, which tasted of Bovril and WD40. Somehow I finished it, with the thought of never having to come in here again providing me with the will power to get to the bottom of the glass.

Alan Winfield left this review about Chequers Inn

On a very recent revisit to this pub i heard from the barman who is a workmate during the week that the lounge to this pub has not been in use for at least four years, this just leaves the basic bar to have a drink in,this room seems pretty much the same has it did years ago, very basic bench seating and a lino type floor, there was a decent selection of keg bitters on the bar,i had a drink of Worthington Cream Crap which was better than i thought it would be and only £2.00 a pint, the other keg bitters were John Smiths Smooth Crap and the even worse John Smiths Extra Cold Crap.
They do do mainstream bottled bitters.
No food here, but they do Karaoke at weekends.
There is talk of the lounge being converted into a Post Office at some point, which is situated across the road at the moment.
The pub now looks in a right state outside with lots of peeling paintwork.

The Chequers is in the middle of Stapleford,it is an oldish brick built pub that used to be a Bass tied house.
There is a beer garden at the side of the pub once you go inside the bar is to the right and is quite basic with a pool table at the far end of this narrowish room, there are no real ales on the bar only smooth flow rubbish.
The lounger is down a couple of steps to the left has you enter this is quite cosy and dark but it is not open during the day only in the evening.

Original Review 2010

Pub first visited 1980

Recent visit 24/8/2015

Update:

For some strange reason the Chequers has been renamed to The Old Rock,
the lounge has now been reopened after a long closure and been done up,four had pumps have been put in the lounge,on a very recent visit, there was Scribblers Beyond Reasonable Stout,Nottingham EPA,Doom Bar and another Scribbles beer, all very reasonably priced.
It is good to have the Ex Chequers back on the real ale map.
