The village of Turville, nestling in the Chilterns wilderness is noted for its use in the BBC sitcom The Vicar of Dibley, and those of a certain age might recognise the Cobstone windmill at the top of the valley opposite which made an appearance in the 1968 film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. This Grade II-listed 16th Century pub certainly benefits from the fanfare and despite being in the sticks, clement weather can see this packed inside and out. Plenty of beams and a small bar offers three from the Brakspear stable - Bitter, Oxford Gold and Gravity (£3.90 for a pint of the latter). The garden, to the left of the building and between pub and car park is a decent suntrap and food offerings are of the slightly higher end of pub grub. Not a world-beater, but enough history to wow family members or prospective date with.

A pretty pub in a picturesque village (which you might have been spotted in Midsomer Murders). Retains old two-roomed layout but little difference between them; both have a very pleasant rustic feel. Beers from Brakspear (Cask Marque listed)and good food. Has benefit of large car park and equally large garden area, with a function room in the adjacent building. Recommended
