Thankfully almost no change here whatsoever with Mick the Hat still in residence. Two Hook Norton ales on, Hooky and Bitter both from stillage and both, for my money, a little under-par. Situated in the middle of hunting country and a small bunch turned up which made for an interesting contrast with my good self. Noted a grassed beer garden which I assume is accessed by traversing the perimeter of the pub.

Classic, unspoilt Hook Norton pub set in an idyllic rural landscape, listed in the CAMRA National Inventory. Inside the single small room it is as if time has stood still since the late 1960’s with huge amounts of bric-a-brac (and cobwebs), presided over by landlord ‘Mick the Hat’ who is quite a character, a proper old skool ‘Mine Host’. It’s a single-room bar with two stillaged Hooky beers on during my visit. Filled rolls available from behind the teeny bar. The only nod to modernity is a CD player allowing for eclectic period classics to be played at a reasonable volume. Opening hours can be a bit fluid, so best ring ahead. It’s one of those ‘try before you die’ sort of places. Rated 8.5

Having passed this way regularly for over 30 years I'm amazed we never came across this gem before. It's as traditional a village pub as you could ever find, the bar a single room affair with the cellar out the back, the Hook Norton range on gravity stillage. It's in the CAMRA national inventory of pub interiors and if it isn't Grade I listed it should be.

The proceedings, involving a friendly array of regulars, are conducted by Mick the Hat, who is something of an institution in these parts and the welcome is warm.

Just five minutes off the M40, it makes a near compulsory stop now if we're passing at the right time. Those who live nearby are lucky buggers indeed, there aren't many pubs like this left now.
