Proper family run freehouse accessed by a long drive off the A49 just north of Whitchurch , there is a large car park , to reach the pub you have to cross the canal lock (hence the pubs name)by means of a footbridge . There is a seating area to the front overlooking the canal and a beer garden to the rear , the pub (an ex lockkeepers cottage)is entered down steps , there is a small hall and then your in the main body of the pub , a dining room is to the left to the right is the bar area which is divided by a low wall to make a couple of distinct areas , there is another small snug like area on the way to the toilets , a large collection of teapots is dotted around the place and adds a bit of character . Up to six ales on depending on time of year , mostly local brews Wheatwood , Spitting Feathers , Stonehouse etc plus some from further afield Skinners , Thwaites etc as well as usual tap stuff . The beer is always well kept , the service is friendly and the food looks good (not eaten) Well worth a visit if in the area though beware the opening hours they close between 3 and 6 in the afternoon , and accses is ackward for the less mobile

Family run freehouse , wide and varied selection of real ales , decent food if not that trendy ie proper food , mixed grills and the like . Access over footbridge with steps so not that easy if you have walking difficulty {felt sorry for delivery man i counted 5 trolleys of wine/softdrinks he took over bridge} Canal{lock} side tables great on a summers day just relax and watch the world float by{and the sweaty deliverymen}
