E TA left this review about The Smithy

A village local resurrected from dilapidation by the current landlady after along period under threat. It’s on the main road through the village but despite its proximity to the A303 is unspoiled. There is a rather scruffy car park at the back, large potholes and an unconsolidated surface, from which the pub can be entered via a nondescript garden. The back door was locked when we visited, so we thought the pub was closed, but the front door was open. Inside is much more pleasant. The main bar has been formed from two earlier rooms, and there are open plan rooms adjacent, including a long restaurant area which houses a piano. The other end houses a pleasant, cosy snug area with an open fire. There are various art works for sale around the walls, while the gents’ lavatory is decorated with Larsen cartoons; this makes a comfort break last longer while you read the cartoons. There was soft music playing in the background which didn’t really add anything but was inoffensive. The landlady was very welcoming and good to chat to. The ale selection was between Ruddles Bitter and Abbot, and there were 2 real ciders on draft. I rather enjoyed it here and would like to come back and have a meal some time.
