A traditional old pub in this small village on the outskirts of Wells, this has fortunately bucked the trend in that it was converted to an Indian restaurant a few years ago, but it now back to being a proper pub with no sign that it was ever anything else. It was fairly quiet on a recent Saturday lunchtime visit, with just a few locals propping up the bar.
The drinker’s bar is to the right and this has quite a cosy ambience with old flagstones on the floor and a couple of hefty black beams on the ceiling. Wood panelling covers the lower part of the walls and there is a stone fire-place with a small wood burning stove. There was a plasma stuck up on the wall showing the football, but fortunately the volume was low and this was not too intrusive. A restaurant area is to the left which also looked to be quite cosy with exposed stone walls and a few pictures dotted around.
Beers on tap were Thwaites Wainright, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Butcombe. Ciders were Old Rosie and Thatcher’s Gold. All in all, this seems a decent village pub and the residents of Wookey are lucky to have this and two others to choose from.
