A village pub in a house dating from the 16th Century, substantially modernised and extended thus losing much of its original architectural charm.  There is a small amount of parking at the front of the building, and a larger car park just a few yards up the hill.  It’s off the beaten track, but it’s still popular with people who drive out from Taunton as well as the local hamlets. Some people even cycle out here, and there is a cycle rack for their benefit.  The garden is hidden behind the house – it consists of a patio area with good views, and a grassed area. Most of its business is now around food – there are 4 separate dining areas, some in extensions, around a central bar, which is open plan and includes a small lounge area with sofas by the brick chimney breast, in which there is a woodburner.  Sadly the lounge, like most of the rest of the bar, was overrun with small children.  Food was good, though it wasn’t easy to enjoy a quiet meal with all the children running around.  Two ales on – Exmoor Fox and Hanlon’s Yellowhammer, both in good condition, served with a sneer by the over-familiar young barman.  Worth a visit if you’re not looking for a quiet pint.

Under new management since the last review. Probably not for the better unfortunately. Round South Somerset St Austall seem to be having a push - taking over the supply of everything from Bitter, Thatchers cider to their own Korev Lager. It means that pubs like this which are not concentrating on their beer range churn out Tribute and Trelawny and Proper Job. The latter is a nice beer when right. Unfortunately here it was served at 4 C through a flash cooler. Tasteless. When it warmed up it wasn't much better, nor was the Tribute or Butcombe which was also available. Quite a few people were eating, the interior was bright, clean but a bit sterile - a refurb too far. Average.

Good country pub in the middle of nowhere, but well worth seeking out - friendly staff, OK beers and good food. Above average.
