A beautiful building that not many years ago was one of the most popular pubs in the area, unfortunately now the current owners haven’t quite got to grips with the ‘village pub’ concept.
The only available menu is Tapas and although very nice it hasn’t changed in the last 12 months, & no children’s menu at all.
The warm welcome from previous owners has sadly gone unless you’re fortunate enough to have one of the cheerful bar staff to greet you. The landlady definitely is not a people person, and has a very prickly and unfriendly way about her.
The toilets here are abysmal! The ladies toilet seat is a complete liability and my husband said that the gents was very ‘aromatic’ in a bad way.
The real ales on offer are usually very good and kept in fabulous condition.
All in all a wonderful building in a lovely village setting but in my opinion needs new owners that understand village life a little more than the current ones do.

Update: now recovering from the COVID era, the pub has reduced to two ales, though these are very well kept. Butcombe Bitter and QPA were the latest offerings, and both in excellent condition. The scabby old smoking shelter has gone from the yard at the back, replaced with an open air seating area for outside dining and drinking, while a smaller smoking shelter has been created between the skittle alley and the back of the kitchen. The interior is getting tired, while the menu is still not right for the area. A specials board was advertising tapas, though I do hope they'll get back to their previous full menu soon. The locals remain friendly, and the atmosphere is convivial. Let's hope it picks up again and comes back to its former glory.

A 16th Century stone village freehouse with parking at the back and a large grassed garden behind that. When it's wet, the two both end up quite muddy. There is a covered smoking area with a pool table at the back of the building, and the rear entrance feels a little industrial. Once inside, however, the pub is very pleasant. There is a bar at the back mainly used as a dining room, while the front bar has a mix of tables for diners and drinkers. There is also a skittle alley and separate function room upstairs. Ingredients for the meals are locally sourced - some from their own garden - and meals are freshly cooked. The menu is restaurant fare, not cheap, and daily changing specials. There were three ales on, plus 5 local real ciders including from nearby Burrowhill. I had a pint of Butcombes which was in excellent condition, affirmation of their previous GBG entry. An excellent village pub with a strong local feel, well worth seeking out for its food and beer.

Update: Beer range was Butcombe, Cheddar Potholer and Teignworthy Scrum down. Burrow Hill cider available plus ashton press. No change to pub quality although it is now up for sale.

Two visits recently on a friday (pub packed) and Tuesday (pub near empty) this week. 4 hand pumps dispensing Butcombe, Doom Bar, Moor Merlins Magic and Yeovil Ruby, which was excellent. Some people eating the food looks above average but I tend not to eat in pubs often.
It is worrying that pubs are so quiet midweek. It is the tail end of January though so this is their "dead" period.
A good village freehouse, shame the village doesn't use it more in the week.
