Originally a hunting lodge, then a hotel, the business is now predominantly a restaurant and B&B, though there is a large, stone-floored bar at one end which performs the function of a village pub. The outside, being listed, has retained its impressive stone facade, while the interior has been substantially renovated and is modern yet comfortable. There is a pleasant, sheltered garden at the back, a couple of bench seats on small lawned areas at the front and plenty of parking. There is a function room, called 'The Stables', while the B&B accommodation is in pleasant chalet-style rooms on the courtyard. The bar offered 'pie and a pint' style meals for those who don't fancy the restaurant. There were 2 ales on, Butcombe's and Cheddar Ales's Gorge Best, both in good condition. They also sell Barrow Hill Brandy, local cider and a reasonable wine selection, though it is predictably un-cheap. It should be a truly excellent establishment, and all the ingredients are there, but somehow it was a bit lacking. Maybe it felt too contrived, perhaps the young barman's flippant attitude or the landlord's lack of a welcome had something to do with it. Whatever, I would be happy to come back to try the restaurant food, maybe I would suggest it as a B&B, but I don't see my enjoying an evening's libation here.

Beer is now served direct from the cellar as hand pumps were redundant, check board over bar for ales on, Moor Merlin's magic and Bath Spa both in good order. Lots of people eating so the food should be OK.
