Country pub that was slightly busier than I had expected when I arrived shortly after lunch on a Thursday afternoon.

The pub has 3 sections, a small central bar area, another lounge to the left-hand side also with access to the bar and a much larger dining room up a few steps off to the right-hand side. At the rear, there is a garden. But there is also a table or two at the front.

The bar has 4 handpulls. Adnams Bitter is the regular beer and there were a couple of guests (Nethergate Azza March Hare & Colchester Snake Charmer). The fourth handpull was unclipped.

A CAMRA award for being runner-up in its National Pub-Saving Award 2022 is proudly displayed in the bar, as this is a pub saved by the community. A bowl of water indicated that dogs are welcome. Although none were present for my visit.

In reference to the previous review almost 10 years ago, I can't say I've heard of Dropping Well beers. Although I'm almost certain that brewing has discontinued here.

The local wag who was sat outside when I arrived came into the pub and asked for some helicopter crisps, but settled for plane when the barmaid looked bemused, whilst most other customers were actually women finishing their lunches. This made a refreshing change.

I quite liked this pub and whilst I didn't know it at the time, it would end up being my favourite Essex pub of the day.

Called into this pub as it has recently started brewing Dropping Well beers. They had 2 on the bar, and we tried them both. Boblow and Ding, both at 3.9%. They were both good beers, but the Ding was my favourite. Appears to be a popular community pub, but was quiet just after lunch when we called in.
