This is very much a food led pub and turned out to be the best place we ate in Bungay. It’s a former 15th Century pub that was re-opened in 2016 after a modern refurbishment by the new owner and is bright and airy with a modern decor with several areas for eating and drinking including an upstairs dining room which we didn’t see. However the original exposed beams and low ceilings and two enormous stone fireplaces remain to give the place some character.
Whilst staying in a holiday cottage up the road we picked this one out for dinner on a sleepy Monday evening and was so impressed we booked it for our last night as well, especially as the bar supports three ale pumps that have local well kept beers on. For our first visit these were Tindall Ales Galaxy Dream, Lacons Brewery Vista Pale Ale and Barsham Brewery Oaks Amber Bitter, and then the Barsham beer changed to the breweries Golden Close IPA for our second visit, , and the ones we tried were all well kept.
The only real issue I would say for the Fleece is if you visit just for a beer, as outside the small snug room and the settee seating in front of the bar the rest of the space is set for dining. However I thoroughly recommend coming here for the food and then it’s only a five minute walk afterwards to The Green Dragon for a traditional pub experience and a pint of their home brew.
On the food front we tried four different mains from the menu during our visits and they were all good, but the Swannington Pork Chop was a particular highlight, as was the Devilled Whitebait we shared as a starter.

A highly-modernised old town pub, with various areas and rooms on different levels and a courtyard beer garden behind. Ales include a couple of local brews.

A busy centre of town pub and on my visit a lot of people having food. You step down into the pub and it features low beamed ceilings. Four Adnams on handpump and a London Pride. Would call again
