A five minute walk South of the Rat & Ratchet is Tee Star. A very traditional looking pub on both the outside and inside. They have regular beer festivals and were in the process of setting up for one the following week when we visited. Plenty of handpumps on the bar without the festival ones. My pint of Atom Singularity was in very good nick and the regulars seem like a friendly bunch. Just be aware that it doesn't open until 5 Tuesday - Friday and not at all on Monday. A very good pub though.

This is a very good traditional pub about a five to ten minute walk south of the Huddersfield ring road and is worth the walk and isn’t that far from the acclaimed Grove and rat and ratchet to be done as part of a decent treble. The comfortable carpeted interior is well described below and on an absolute foul early Friday evening the PuG crawl crew really appreciated the wood burner in the small area dividing rul which was making the pub very cosy.
As well as Pictish Brewers Gold and TT Boltmaker, which I believe are house beers, Captain Cook Brewery Slipway, Brightside TFI Friday, Atom Singularity, Mallinsons Centennial, Stockport G W Buck Bitter and Oakham Ales Study in Scarlet were on the other pumps for our visit. I tried the Oakham and Atom brews and they were both in good condition.
Although virtually empty except for one other when we arrived, there was a decent number by the time we left as the locals started coming in after work.
A good pub and well worth the walk when in Huddersfield.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Star Inn

Traditional side-street pub, with a partially opened-out two-room layout with various seating areas. Retains an old-fashioned (in a good way) 'local' feel, with no new-fangled electronic entertainment apparatus but keeping a real fire. Eight of ten regular handpumps in use on the main bar, with a fine selection of mostly local beers, although I went for the Atom Singularity (£1.45, half). Also has a row of other pulls on the rear counter for beer festivals, etc. Well worth the short walk south from the town centre.

A very decent free house this one and well worth the walk down from the Rat and Rachet. The manageress was friendly and helpful and didn't fluster, when the PG crew piled in looking for beer. The pub had eight handpumps in action on our visit, so I went for the Atom Singularity, whilst Mrs A went for the Captain Cook Brewery Slipway, both were in top notch condition. There was also a separate bar area with a row of handpumps unclipped ready and waiting for the beer festivals that they hold here. The pub is traditional and carpeted throughout, the welcoming log burning stove was an inviting addition on our visit.

Bucking Fastard left this review about The Star Inn

A very traditional and respectable pub far enough away from the Town centre to retain the atmosphere of a friendly local with a lounge vibe. It's open plan and carpeted throughout, with various section away from the island serving bar.Wood burners around the interior, with traditional banquettes and furniture there is no flatscreen or excessive muzak, just the hubub of ale drinkers in this GBG regular. The 10 handpumps had many Locales on ,including Mallinsons On Yer Bike, brews from Bob's and Crystal,Pictish Gold,TT Landlord and a whole lot more I failed to note carefully.Often described as part of a triumvirate of pubs this side of town worth a visit (with the Rat&Ratchet and Grove being the other two),I would say this one is pretty good but just comes up a little short compared with the Big Two.

Old Boots left this review about The Star Inn

Well known and well regarded pub a little way from the town centre but still conveniently close to the Grove and Rat & Ratchet and part of that group of outstanding pubs. Open plan layout although it was probably a two room pub orginally, the counter is centrally placed at the back and is home to 10 handpulls serving excellent beer generally from micros. It has an all purpose Victorian interior retaining the old waiter service buttons but has been modernised. Furnishings are the traditional comfortable style and the décor the usual old photos and pump clips, with an enviable collection of CAMRA awards. Bear in mind Pubsignman's advice about opening times.

Pub SignMan left this review about The Star Inn

This is a very smart looking real ale pub in the Lockwood area of Huddersfield, but only a 10-15 minute walk from the town centre. The pub is well furnished, with deep pile carpets, some smart banquette seating booths and a decent amount of standard tables and chairs throughout. I only stopped off for a quick pint in here, so I didn't have time to fully explore beyond the right hand bar, but it appeared that there was another room to the left and a garden out the back.
The beer range was very good, as I'd hoped, with Milestones Lions Pride, Timothy Taylors Landlord and Best Bitter, Mallinson’s Danger, Hops! and Sarah's Sweater, Six Bells Cockchafer, Pictish Black Diamond and Brewer’s Gold plus something from the Salamander Brewery and something else from Arkwright’s. I tried a pint of the Danger, Hops!, served to me by the friendly landlady, and found it to be in good condition. The locals seemed like a friendly bunch and were happy enough for me to join in their conversation and a rather charming pub dog was wandering around trying to get some attention.
I would have liked to spend a little more time here, but the pub doesn't open until 5pm on weekdays, so my schedule meant that I was unfortunately restricted to just the one short visit. I read recently that the pub has just put on its 6000th different beer, which strikes me as quite an achievement and is a clear sign of a pub that's putting a lot of effort into providing great variety for their customers. I'd definitely recommend this pub to anyone visiting Huddersfield - just remember to check opening times beforehand.
