A fleeting visit due to time ticking down on the train departure. A fairly simple (and scruffy) JDW though the trussed roof is of passing interest. Oddly dark at the front of the pub, where we found what might have been the only spare table as it was heaving – so my Spoons shares continue to look like a good purchase. Necked a swift half of Titanic Plum Porter (NBSS 3). GBG’23 listed.

Old Boots left this review about The Moon Under Water (Lloyds No 1)

Fairly old school ‘spoons, an ex Lloyds, the front is emblazoned “A JD Wetherspoons Freehouse”. Inside the usual furnishing mix of high and low tables in now scruffy dark wood. A long counter down the left with a five-four-five line up of casks with T-bars interspersed. The behind the counter fridges have some homely wooden signs. Other than a random mix of Ruddles, Abbott and Doombar there were a couple from North Cotswold, Portobello and a Jaipur spread over the pumps. The place has an hourglass shape, being wide at the front, narrowing then ballooning out into an area of low tables with side booths. The ceiling is odd being low at the front then what could be a higher modern extension with visible trusses then low again at the rear and looking older. There are some odd but interesting metal sculptures in the ceiling. All on one floor so it has rear toilets which are CCTV monitored. The staff aren’t bad either.

Real Ale Ray left this review about The Moon Under Water (Lloyds No 1)

A large open plan pub that was a former car show room. The two large Moon sculptures along with sculptured water across the top was of interest to break up the large open trussed roof void. The main highlight to this visit was that they had Salopian Kashmir on handpump, which was only £2.30 a pint, which we enjoyed along with a fellow drinker, standing and chatting at the bar. Nine handpumps, one of which was a cider. Other ales that were on, included Salopian Farside, Hop Twister, Mordue Workie Ticket and Dark Star Hophead. I would return here for the varied selection of ales.

Large open plan spoons. My late night visit probably caught it at it's best when quiet.

This JDW is housed in what is basically a large shed, something with which I don't really see anything wrong. It's wider at the front with the bar in the middle on the left and a narrower slightly raised area at the rear leading to a patio / garden.
It's a Lloyds No 1 and the Lloyds Disaster Area is just in front of the raised rear with a drop down screen which was not in use, lights and an Idiot Booth.
The long bar has two sets of five hand pumps with four in the middle badged with ciders. Beers on were the JDW Trio Of Doom with Abbot doubled, one unused, Purity UBU, Prescott Grand Prix and three festival beers. I went for the Theakston Vanilla Stout (£2.35) which was excellent.
For a Lloyds I thought this place was OK.

As the previous review points out this is a barn of a place , the high ceiling amplifies the noise very well so the half a dozen or so rowdy couples near the front sounded like a football crowd at the pubs rear , service was slow , very slow , the usual sets of two banks of 6 handpulls , 4 of which had coming soon labels .
My Caledonian Rare Red Rye was just OK , the other JDW in town is much better .

Oh Gawd. Fancy drinking in a dark high ceilinged aircraft hangar with both sets of doors taken off, then come here.
Can’t say if this place is better in the dark as one visit was enough for me and I didn’t cross its doors again.
The front is all glass that opens up onto a small seating area onto the street and then the back is a nice decked area which overlooks the River Chelt and Sandford Park. It’s just the massive open space in the middle that was the problem, in that on a bright sunny day you get to the bar and it’s like being in a darkened tunnel with light streaming in from both ends.
Perhaps I over egg this but I guess you get the point I really didn’t like this one. And when I got back to look at the Wetherspoons web site to see that this former Lloyds No1 near the east end of the pedestrianised High Steet is a converted former car showroom, I understood why.
Message to Timothy Randall Martin. Converting former Picture and Opera houses with oodles of historical character into pubs is a fantastic thing to do. Even converting former Banks into pubs (oh, like the other Wetherspoons outlet on the other end of the High Street) is appreciated. But converting Car showrooms into pubs ?. Don’t be so f*****g stupid!
For the record there were two sets of 6 ale pumps along the bar and along with the Abbot, Ruddles and Purity UBU and Mad Goose house ales as in the other spoons, apparently they also have 5 changing guest ales from a wide range of local micro breweries.
But frankly, who cares?, I don’t because I’m never coming back here.
