Bustling food-based pub, with a nice old interior although a bit crammed with tables. Good range of Marston's beers and the food was ok if not exceptional. OK for a pit stop.

Three Marstons beers plus a house ale "hole brew", it's a multi spaced pub mainly for eating; there are some bench seats but mostly it's tables and chairs that prevail. Old photos of York, some interesting prints of Victorian convicts at hard labour, the pub is on the site of a gaol, and a potted history complete the decor. It has exposed brick and stone, some low beams looking suitably old, and it's carpeted through out. The Pedigree was cold but adequate, it's ok but in York there's always better nearby.

Another Marstons pub like the minster inn up the road except this pub is not in the good beer guide. This was strange as this had six much more beer and a better selection (if still from the marstons range).
I had a pint of mansfield cask ale (£2.94) and although different to how i remembered it tasting was still a nice drink at a very reasonable price.

This pub is allot more welcoming then the minster inn with nice warm carpets and comfy furniture. it also wins on price as a banks sunbeam here was 32p cheaper than the Minster inn and this pub is located in a prime location within the city walls in close proximity to um market restaurants and bars.

On a whole I much preferred this Marstons pub as it provided a nice environment with good beer and better choice at reasonable prices, maybe the Minster inn keeps a very slightly better pint but for me this wins hands down, worth a visit.

The bar at the Hole in the Wall is to the left of the entrance where there is also some seating under the front window. More seating is found to the right and up the right hand wall. With the addition of more seating at the rear this sounds like a large pub, but it is not as all of these areas are very cosy. I found the staff to be very friendly, but unfortunately some of the customers had left their manners back in Newcastle.

During my recent Saturday afternoon visit there was no background music playing and I didn’t spot any televisions. The bar supports five hand pumps and there is also a standard draught selection. Traditional pub food is available with the mains priced around £10.

This is a decent enough city centre pub that is worthy of a visit if in the area.

A Georgian brick pub in a popular street between Bootham Bar and York Minster. We sat in the front by the window on a late pre Christmas Saturday lunchtime. Busy with shoppers and tourists, service was quick, though pressure of numbers made for an element of confusion at the bar.
Not a particularly large building, the interior layout of discrete areas and cosy corners adds to a homely atmosphere. Tied to Marston’s, I enjoyed a pint of Ringwood XXXX porter: flavoursome, but served too cold in my opinion. Our ham ‘n’ eggs were adequate, albeit somewhat on the light side.
A reasonable town pub in a city of superb town pubs.

I must admit that this isn't one of my favourite pubs in York. Having said that, it's perfectly presentable, nicely decorated and furnished. It's a Marston's house so it serves a range of 5 cask ales from their extended stable. All the pints I've had in here have been in good condition. It just doesn't stand out for the decor or beer range in a city like York.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Hole in the Wall

Marstons pub housed in quite a plain, if solid-looking, old building. The interior has been partially opened out to provide various traditionally-furnished seating areas around the main bar area. Five handpumps, offering Mansfield Cask, Marstons Burton Bitter and Pedigree, Jennings Bitter and Cocky Blonde. Gives the impression of being a well-run place, so worth popping in if around the nerarby York Minster.
