Reappeared to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The interior has had (yet another) going-over after the arrival of (yet another) tenant and the front bar really is a nasty scruffy stripped-out mess now, like Linda Barker meets Stevie Wonder, and you can tell that they aren’t after the drinking man’s business. The rear dining rooms are a lot better. Food was top-end prices but pretty good in fairness. In the interests of research I went for the two cask ales on offer, both Brakspear badged - Gravity (NBSS 2.5) and Brakspear Oxford Gold (1).

A nice old building on the outside, with the inside having been done out in a very 'modern ambient' feel. Two ales on (Brakspear Bitter and Marstons list guest) which are usually OK without being overly inspiring. Large rear conservatory is laid out for food - friends have eaten here and enjoyed it. More of an eating house than a pub now, generally fitted out in rustic farmhouse style. There is a cosy corner at the front with easy chairs and a fireplace, with a couple of separated areas off to the side and larger dining areas and conservatory behind. Service was somewhat erratic, with the sole barman dividing his time between different customers, preparing table orders and mulling wine, while being a bit lacking on the full measure front. Draught beers were Brakspear's Gravity, Oxford Gold, Hobgoblin and the December Oh Be Joyful, but those sampled were far too cold and lacking any flavour.

Re-opened a little ahead of schedule in the February of 2019 after a refurb which reinforced its gastro leaning. A J-shaped bar faces, with a small pubby snug to the left. There's a table in the window to the right and some raised tables and seats in front of a semi-partioned bit to the right. Seating dead ahead, with a hidden room behind the bar and a new conservatory bit added to the far right which looked rather elegant. Be-aproned waiting staff and four pumps to choose from - Brakspear Bitter x2, Oxford Gold and Special. To my disappointment, the Special was off as was one of the Bitters, so a pint of OK-ish Oxford Gold it was for £4.20. I had to suggest the barman reverse the two "off" clips, which he did to a little cajoling - one thinks the beer husbandry isn't one of the main priorities here.
