Absolutely packed when we called in. Can't recall what beers were on but I know the pint I had was decidedly average. Couldn't wait to drink it and move on. Much better options nearby.

One of those 'bigger than it looks' Wetherspoons than extends a long way back behind the narrow frontage. Very little natural light, but the place is well lit and has a light carpet which both help counteract the effect of the dark furniture. Not a very inspiring selection of seven real ales from the two banks of six handpumps, of which the far-from-local Swannay Dark Munro (£2.35) was the pick of the bunch.

A long single roomed pub, with the bar area along the left mid-way and half a dozen booths along the right hand side. There was a lot of work and design put into the art deco style ceiling areas, which had illuminated shadow gaps and a small doom near the bar area. There was also a high gantry walkway at the rear of the pub, which was only accessible to staff to reach the upstairs kitchen and cellar. Two sections of ceilings were painted a jade green colour, which co-ordinated with the 1930's style glass ceiling lamps. A good choice of Oakham Brewery ales on our visit, so we went for the Oakham Mompessons Gold.

This old school Spoons has a very small frontage but inside is long and narrow with the bar on the left further back. Unless you are severely afflicted with koutaliaphobia you will have seen it all before. This doesn't bother me if there is a decent ale choice but my visit was in December and the Spoons Xmas guest list is about as exciting as the rubbish music that gets dragged out every year. This one has twelve hand pumps with one unused, Doom Bore then the two GK beers and Pedigree being doubled up left just four options. These were the International Hook Norton AFO, Caledonian Winter Brau, Greene King Fireside and Woodforde's Mistletoe. I ordered the Fireside thinking it was the Black Country beer but while it was being poured felt like a right wally after discovering it was a Greene King beer.
I thought both Lichfield Spoons were rather disappointing.

By the book Wethers. A large open plan rectangle with, on this day at least, one of the worst selection of real ales to be found in a Wethers. 10 handpumps working consisting of Ruddles, Abbott, Pedigree, Cumberland, Doom Bore, Botanical Beer and Por la Playa thingy. Zzzzzzz

It's a 'spoons but by no means the worst of them.
The artwork reflects local historical figures and there's an odd mezzanine level, which you can't get to but does allow a lot of light into the middle of the boozer so, unlike some 'spoons, you don't feel as though you're boozing in a giant underground cavern.
I've been in a couple of times and they've had the odd interesting beer on every time. The last visit yielded: Slaters Top Totty and Citrus, Cotleigh Osprey,
Blind Man's Golden Spring, Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven and the ubiquitous Pedigree, Abbot and Ruddles Best. The Osprey was fine but not quite good enough to warrant a second.
Worth a look to see what they have on if you're in Lichfield.

Long thin JDW pub which on entry boasted an attractive floral display of hanging baskets,a good selection of real ales and a friendly and efficient bar team.
Thought this was an above average Spoons and seemed to certainly have more atmosphere than The Gatehouse,and the pint of Exmoor Stag was in fine form

A rather more upmarket 'spoons than usual,the interior has a lot of wood paneling and a traditional looking bar back,above which is an open gallery with a faux walkway while further towards the rear there is a circular roof light.Some interesting features to be sure.The two banks of six handpumps had Ruddles Bitter,Abbott and Pedigree all doubled up,but that still left a good selection of guests,Slaters Top Totty and Citrus,Cotleigh Osprey and Blindmans Golden Spring on my trip,all in good nick.The only fly in the ointment were flatscreens showing East Enders with subtitles,that's not what I come to a pub for.
Well worth including on a crawl ,and given the good selection of real ales I will be tempted to pop in when next in the area.

A fair Wetherspoons with a decent range of ales including a couple of local brews in decent nick (forgot to note the brewery). Interior is a bit lighter and airier than usual (having the main window open was helpful on a muggy summer's evening) and I think that makes a difference. Worth a look when crawling the town.
