As this is smack bang in the middle of the city centre and by the very busy gyratory bus stops it can be quite lively. Its not great but because of its location it is popular with stags, hens, shoppers, scallies and pissheads. All the pubs within a 300 yard radius of here are toss anyway so best to go further out.

Old Boots left this review about Yates's

Dark, very noisy, club like atmosphere, opposite the Rat and Parrot and like that arranged over two floors. The toilets, complete with troll, are upstairs. Various screens show a mixture of music and an almost continuous corporate video showing what their target demographic is, apparently actor Will Mellor and friends in the 18-30 age group although there was a sixieth birthday group enjoying themselves when I was there. Looks very popular with younger women. Usual sort of furnishings with vertical drinking space between the high tables and stools downstairs. Long barcounter down one side at the back and it unexpectedly has three handpumps, Bombardier, Cains and St George's Cross, which I am told is specially prepared by Wells & Young for Yates's. I risked a half of St George's and as expected it was absolutely rank, shame I didn't bring any chips to put it on. Stick to keg or bottles in here or Chardonnay with the girlies, no-one's here for the beer.
