A peculiar pub which feels as though it was tarted up for tourists many moons ago but has now reverted to a locals' pub with a band of regulars. The interior is a strange mix of Roman, 1930s, 1950s and 1990s, with the Roman Bathhouse wall friezes still prominent (there is a museum in the cellar below, with admission charge). Food is mentioned in a couple of places online but was noticeable by its absence on a weekday lunchtime - perhaps it is only at certain times. Two handpumps offered TT Landlord and Boltmaker, in tolerable if not brilliant condition, otherwise just standard keg. Adequate, but there are much better pubs nearby.

A single roomed pub with murals of Roman bathers on the walls. 2 real ales and food served. Live music and karaoke advertised. Outside area had a serving hatch to the bar.

Sitting above a Roman bathhouse opened as a museum is the aptly named Roman Bath. The interior is a single room with a small bar area in the left rear corner. Seating is found throughout and all of the tables were full with diners during my recent lunchtime Saturday visit. The location of this pub dictates that it is a popular tourist destination so the food is traditional northern pub grub. I must say that I was surprised at the liberal use of gravy in the north. In fact this pub was the location that I watched a local inhabitant pour gravy over their buttered beef baguette before eating it with a knife and fork… What... The … F..!!? I had a look in the menu but I couldn’t find the sloppy brown baguette meal, but I did note that all of the mains were priced under a tenner. I found the staff to all be very friendly and they all seemed too happy in their work. The bar is stocked with standard draught and the two hand pumps were drawing John Smiths and Theakston’s Old Peculiar.

During my visit there was some low background music playing and I noted that regular live music is held at the weekends. I didn’t see any televisions so there is no live sport aired. Out the back is a beer yard that houses some outside seating.

Although I will not be rushing back to this pub for a beer, I would consider revisiting if I happen to be in the area whilst hankering after a soggy brown gravy roll.

The Roman Bath is in a very busy part of York.
Once inside there is one room and this is usually quite busy, there was only one real ale on here this was John Smiths cask and this was a decent drink.
I think this pub is ok for a quick drink but not a lot more.

Soup Dragon left this review about Roman Bath

A corner pub/eatery in stone, undressed brick and timber frame, with front gables, a shared patio space in the square and a rear patio. It is also a music venue. Underneath is Roman bath museum.

The interior is in an open plan around the serving bar tucked in the opposite corner to the entrance. The decor is white, red, wood panel, with white ceiling. There are mock Roman paintings of bath scenes on the walls, which is different and fun, as well as a few statues of Roman women and a display case with some odd bits of pottery. The place is there for food – with no real bar area. I didn’t eat so can’t comment on that. The service was fine and the clientele mixed, everyone seemingly eating. The background music was charty, at a decent level and there was no TV that I saw.

Beer; usual tap stuff, with the uninspiring John Smiths Cask on handpull. I had Woodpecker cider

A place you would go to if you are not a real ale fan, for food, the decor for a bit of fun and visit the museum. If you are a real fan you will wonder why they don’t really serve any.

So called due to having a roman bath in its cellar, you can visit the baths via a staircase marked Roman Bath Museum just inside the main door. To your left is a single room pub decorated in modern dark wood and brass with murals of roman bathers on the walls. The roman theme is continued in the roman style leaded windows and a display case of roman artifacts. The room is given over to pub grub, the menu being fairly standard pub fare but the portions looked quite well sized including the children's menu. The bar counter in one corner serves a normal range of UK kegs including both Strongbow and Woodpecker ciders, lagers from Carling and Amstel, John Smiths smooth, Guinness and keg wine. Reasonably kept, but too cold, John Smiths as the only cask choice. The staff were very sharp and on the ball
