Steve C left this review about Three Cranes

It was very lively in the Three Cranes during a recent late Thursday afternoon visit, mostly with middle aged women singing and dancing to loud 70s disco music. The pub is split into two with a front bar area that has a L-shaped bar counter in the left rear corner that faces banquettes and tables. There is also a dartboard, good luck trying to play when it’s busy! Standard keg was available and the three hand pumps were drawing Tetleys, TT Landlord and a decent pint of Ossett Brewery’s Yorkshire Blonde.
A step up through the doorway at the rear leads to a back bar with a high table and three normal height copper topped tables. The brick fireplace on the rear wall contains three lit up cranes, as per the pub’s name. Jugs hang from the roof beams, to be honest any other décor is minimal. The toilet at the rear is very small, and some of the locals obviously have directional issues because if the floor was any wetter I’d have needed a snorkel.
Upon entering I thought this was going to be a shitshow, but the friendly service and great atmosphere meant that I enjoyed my visit and would return if passing.

Walking past, I was attracted by the sign in the window saying Settle Blonde was the guest beer. Inside I found an unspoilt little town pub with no frills and, although first impressions were not great, I soon warmed to the feel of the place, with a few locals chatting and absolutely no tourists! Along with the Settle ale, there were Ossett Yorkshire Blonde and Tetleys Cask. A great escape from the commercialism of the city centre and worth supporting.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Three Cranes

Attractive façade to this pub, particularly the large mural sign in the centre. Once inside, you find a surprisingly - given its city-centre location - traditional two-room establishment that seems more focused on the locals than the tourists. Fairly basic furniture and decor in both parts. Three real ales on handpump: Tetley's Cask, John Smith's Cask (£3.10) and Pedigree.

2 roomed pub that seems to be a locals haunt rather than a tourist trap. 3 real ales served.

There is a nice white rendered and glazed brick frontage to this terraced pub, with the pub sign being of painted tile above the central entrance.

The interior is, as other reviewers have said, a little more spit and sawdust. It has two rooms; the main bar room is accessed from the street, it is in red and cream and has a dart board, a TV with Sky Sports News on at my visit, and lots of local old photographs on the walls. Pass the serving bar, a small passage takes you to the back room, which is in white and black timber beams, with a cream ceiling. It has a small brick fireplace, more old photos, other ephemera such a plates, copper tables and a nice wooden settle. The service was fine and the busy, mixed clientele, friendly - indeed, a bunch of lads shifted so we could sit down as they were nearly done. The background music was general and a decent level, the service was friendly and the small, but mixed clientele friendly.

Beer; tap stuff with Tetley Cask, John Smith’s Cask and Harvestoun Bitter and Twisted, which was decent enough.

I have a liking for this place, as it is a local’s pub in an area where many places are touristy. You won’t stay all day, but pop in for one.

The Three Cranes is a proper unaltered pub in the middle of York it was a Stones house when i first went in here.
The pub still has two rooms and there are three punps on the bar i tried the Tetley Bitter which was a decent drink there was also John Smiths cask and a guest beer which i did'nt note.
This pub as always been busy whenever ive been in it.

You enter this pub through a small vestibule, and then a door on the left takes you into the main bar area. I expect that at some time a door on the right would have led you into a separate bar. The main bar is furnished with banquettes, stools and metal framed tables, and is carpeted. There’s a dartboard above the fireplace on the right, and there are few prints plus some black and white photographs on the walls. There’s a separate lounge bar at the back through a door on the right, and is similarly furnished as the front bar. The beers on handpump were Tetleys, John Smith Draught, and Harviestoun Schiehallion.
This is a remarkably ordinary and unspectacular pub, but that can be a plus when so many pubs have been utterly ruined in one way or another. It’s clean and is clearly looked after. You could not say that this is a “must visit” pub, but on the other hand it is not a “must avoid” pub either. It’s an ordinary pub and is worth dropping into for a pint, but I doubt whether I would go out of my way to visit again when there are so many really excellent pubs in York.

A locals pub in a very touristy part of York. Two bar layout, there is a large public bar at the front and a small lounge at the back. It's quite a friendly place, frequented largely by older locals. John Smiths and Tetleys Cask versions, plus a very good Golden Pippin from Copper Dragon for the real ales, a standard keg range is also on sale from friendly attentive staff. Victorian/Edwardian building with the interior in a mix of modern redecoration and some older features, lots of proper bench type pub seats and settles, one being in memory of “Bill Platt – a Gentleman” according to the metal plaque. Half timber internal walls decorated with a collection of prints of old York and Durham.

This is a proper locals pub in the heart of the city. The welcome is what I would call boisterous. Everybody's friendly in a loud and slighty tipsy sort of way. Has a couple of guest ales on the bar. I had a pint of Adnams Explorer which was OK. It wouldn't appeal to most of the tourists that abound round here, which is why the regulars probably consider it to be a bit of a haven. It's OK but there are better pubs in the vicinity.
