This was better than expected - in fact I'd been warned in advance that I wouldn't like it, but it really wasn't too bad. Of course, it's not the kind of traditional pub that I go for, having been opened up to a large extent and being somewhat impersonal as a consequence. There was a choice of six real ales (see photos) and although two of them were GK Abbot and Ruddles Best, and two were "available soon" (just like a 'Spoons) the remainder were sufficiently interesting and cheap at £1.15 for a half to get my grudging approval. There was horse racing on the TV sets and pool and darts in a separate room. I didn't see a disabled access toilet, though as there was one before JDW sold the pub, it's unlikely that there isn't one now.

Even though all Wetherspoons provide the same menu the quality of food and service seems to be miles apart at each one. Recently had lunch here after not going in for a while due to a bad food experience and it was really nice and pleasant, the food was lovely, well cooked and plenty of it, so can't complain.

Alan Winfield left this review about The Red Lion (JD Wetherspoon)

The Red Lion was a large Home Ales tied house on the corner of a busy T junction in the middle of Heanor.
Now it is a smallish Wetherspoons and once inside the pub has been opened out to make the most of the space available, the seating and decor are usuall Wetherspoons and there is a good choice of real ales on the bar,the drink i had was a decent drink but i car'nt remember what it was.
