It's been reported that Saturday 18th February will be its last day as a Spoons.

Review as a Spoons June 2016

This is a Spoons set in a grand old building that sadly is earmarked for closure as it appears on the third list from May 2016. It's been well described below and I didn't venture upstairs. The main bar downstairs seems to have almost entirely high tables and chairs as does the smaller bar area further back. I counted six hand pumps in the main bar which had the JDW footbore International beer, Cumberland Corby Amber, Cameron's Fridge Magnet, Doom Bore, Abbot and Mordue Radgie Gadgie. The rear bar's four hand pumps had Ruddles, a cider, the pathetic Marston's One Is 90 and Elgood's Greyhound. I went for the Cumberland beer (£2.39) which was in good nick and sat in the dining room.
This is a great building but I found the lack of low tables and chairs on the ground floor a bit of a pain. Despite that it's a travesty that this place should go when they've got a really rubbish one in the city namely the Keel Row.

An amazing JDW conversion from the old Union Club - the pictures do it better justice than my words but I'll have a go. Enter to a sumptuous lobby area with a grand staircase facing. On the lower floor are two bars over a myriad of characterful rooms, whilst upstairs hosts three more sumptuous rooms and another bar. The upstairs bar room affords a good view towards the Royal Station Hotel. Loads of ales on, and seemingly different across all the bars. My Tyneside Blonde was in very good shape for early morning. A Wetherspoons for people who don't usually like the chain.

One of the better Wetherspoon' that seemed to have bars all over the place. A good selection of well kept real ales.

A large Wetherspoons set in what was the Union Club in the mid 19th century. The original building layout being what it is, unusually we have a multi-roomed JDW which benefits from having three separate bars, two on the ground floor and one upstairs. The beers vary across the bars but are listed on a board by the entrance. Many rooms have very high and ornate ceilings, several areas of mosaic floor remain. The staircase to the upper floor is magnificent and is set off well by the large rooflight above. You can compare the original building with today as there are the original plan drawings framed both upstairs outside the gents toilets plus downstairs in the small front Family Room. What was once an inner courtyard has now got a glazed roof over but the half height blue and cream tiles give this area a feel of an old fashioned fishmongers shop.
The main bar in the front room is attractive and ornate with the curved dark wood bar dominating the space. Unfortunately despite it only being 12:15 on a Sunday lunch there was a boisterous and rowdy bunch in here meaning that many others, ourselves included, felt the need to sit elsewhere. Of the three first floor areas, one is reserved solely for diners.
Beerwise there was a fair selection of guests on even if most were Christmas ales of a similar style. As 'spoons go, this place is pretty good.

Only a couple of mins walk from Central station and well worth a visit. This is by far one of the best Spoons I have visited. This impressive venue was once a gentlemens ,where most probably a lot of indulgence took place. Visiting late on a Tues eve gave us a good run of the place and we were served with ease. I found the staircase and the 1st floor stunning. Ten ales on the go, I went for the Geltsdale Tarn and Cotleigh Buzzard.

This place is one of the better Wetherspoons around. It's in a fine building that has been sympathetically converted. It always has a good range of guest ales on usually about 8. It has 3 separate bars so you can usually get served at one of them. Even if it's a bit of a scrum downstairs you can usually get a seat or at least a decent bit of standing room upstairs. If you're sneaky and a CAMRA member you can use three of your 50p off tokens in one visit, one at each of the three separate bars, when of course you're only supposed to use one per visit. It's pretty good really. When we called in recently it was very quiet, but it was a Monday night.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Union Rooms (JD Wetherspoon)

Interesting old building, with a curious room layout and three different bars to choose from. As you would expect from a 'spoons, you get the usual excellent selection of real ales at low, low prices (especially if you've got a 50p-off voucher). Lots of local beers, including a good pint of 'Angel' from the nearby Wylam Brewery, and very handy for the station too.
